I pulled this picture from the Stone Safaris website. They advertise this as the #4 SCI lion. http://www.stonehuntingsafaris.com/SCI.html I lightened it in a photo editor so that it can be clearly seen that it was killed by the same person who shot the 50" canned buffalo being discussed in the Discounted Hunts forum. Can some of you fellows who know about judging lions offer and opinion as to whether it appears to be a true wild lion? Here he is with the buffalo.

Well, let it me put it this way. Because this man seems to have a one track mind in chasing glory in the record book, and having just taken Mr. Payne's offer to add another great trophy to his collection, after that trophy has been groomed in a pin. I would suspect that ALL his trophies might have been gotten in exactly the same way. Especially if they have been arranged by Stone Safaris! I have absolutely nothing against people shooting whatever they wish, but to declare them as "hunting trophies" they certainly are not. I shoot animals in my back yard, and post them here, stating exactly where they have been shot. I have some animals that would score quite high in the SCI book. Do you think I should shoot them and enter them? Not on your life mate!

It is important to know where the lion was killed. That is, in which country and where in that country. It is also important to know the name of the hunting operator. In this case, we know the operator, and we know that they apparently have no scruples about shooting pen-raised dangerous game animals behind fences. But we also know that the operator hunts in Tanzania, where it is highly unlikely, not to say impossible, that one could shoot a canned lion even if one wanted to do so. Still, with answers to the "where" questions in this case, we would be able to draw a conclusion - not to a "beyond a reasonable doubt" standard - but well enough, IMHO. He doesn't have that "blow dried" look to me. But given the buffalo debacle and the laundry list this client and others have shot, doesn't seem like a bad guess to me.

If I am reading this correctly, this lion was shot in Masailand Tanzania, 2008. Go to the bottom of the outfitters page and click on African Lion. This is a GREAT cat. Kathi kathi@wildtravel.net 708-425-3552 "The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page."

Looks wild to me, the canned models have much more hair, some of it going right back! But as they say in the NY lottery "Hey you never know"

Jason Stone hunts in Tanzania through Game Frontiers of Tanzania. I'm speculating, but don't think I am too far off by saying both the Lion and Buff were probably shot in the Burunge block, on the western border of Tarangire National Park. It is a small block, but the trophys that do come off are normally of a good standard.

Well . . . based on Kathi's work, I would conclude that this lion is NOT a canned lion - IMHO, of course, based upon the evidence specifically adduced in this instance. The hunter in question would appear to have the requisite experience with wild game animals hunted in fair chase circumstances to know better in 50 inch buffalo behind high fence circumstances. Hard to understand how he could make the poor judgments he has apparently chosen to make in such other cases. Shame to say that it is probably nothing more than the record book and the inches. I have taken the position, just and only my personal one; that any lion shot these days with a nice full mane is a pen raised one. Nobody goes to Africa to hunt lion, ponies up sixty or so thousand dollars and comes home empty handed these days. Waaay too much ego involved to risk that. I waded enough "bush" to feel qualified to make that statement. Rich

Rich: I didn't take a lion in my last 3 trips to Tanzania and I spent way more than that each time. It does happen.

It is very easy to spend $60k and 21 days hunting Lion and come home without one. It just takes the internal fortitude to say "NO" to an immature Lion when it is offered. Ask me how I know this to be true. Mike ______________ DSC DRSS (again) SCI Life NRA Life Sables Life Mzuri IPHA "To be a Marine is enough."

Rich, As politely as possible I'd like to say you have once again figuratively stepped on your own crank. Big dollars do not equal dead full maned lions. Ask the the 85% of TGTS's clients that don't score. They all pay $60,000 plus. I have spent spent that kind of money myself and not shot a lion. It's called hunting. Sincerely, Mark MARK H.
