I am an archer an rarely take a gun along on my trips. Though this year I am taking a 338 WM along with my archery gear to spend some time hunting with a family member before I go off on my own hunt.
My ticket is on SAA out of Dulles to Jo'Burg to Windhoek. Am I able to legally place half my ammo in my gun case and the other half in my luggage (placed in a locked cash box) for a total of 60 rounds?

The quantity shouldn't be a problem... whether it can go in the gun case is debatable point.

I've taken it in mine and would say that opinions/experiences break out at about 50-50 on those that say you can vs. those that say you can't.

It depends on what individual checks you in at the airline and what TSA agent inspects the ammo.

Cats, I'd be safe and pack it all in the luggage separate from the rifles. I only say this because I had it packed in my TuffPak with my rifles going over last year and had no problem. But coming back, Delta through a fit with my ammo being in my TuffPak with my rifles, and they made me take it out and put it in my other checked bag. I know that it didn't make sense in light of their own rules, but it is better to be overly cautious than find yourself dealing with a problem that may cause you to miss a flight or lose your ammo.

I guess my idea is that if my luggage doesn't show up I have ammo in the gun case. If the gun case doesn't make it the ammo isn't needed anyway.

Some airlines require the ammo to be packed seperately from the firearm. I think it is more an airline policy issue than a legal issue.
