Mr Bronkhorst is a free man, though the state could still press fresh charges
A Zimbabwe court has dropped charges against a professional hunter alleged to have helped an American dentist to kill a famous lion named Cecil.
It ruled that the charges against Theo Bronkhorst "were too vague to enable to him to mount a proper defence".
His lawyer, Perpetua Dube, told the BBC the offence did not have the force of the law and was not criminal in nature.
American dentist Walter Palmer who killed the famed lion last year was not charged.
The lion - a favourite at Hwange National Park - was shot by Mr Palmer with a bow and arrow.
He is said to have paid about $50,000 (£32,000) to hunt the lion.
Cecil's killing sparked international outrage, and prompted a global campaign to end lion trophy hunting.
Mr Bronkhorst said in court that he had obtained all the permits required to kill an elderly lion that was outside the national park boundaries.
He is now a free man, though the state could still press fresh charges, the BBC's Shingai Nyoka in Zimbabwe's capital Harare reports.
Cecil attracted photographic safaris and was part of an Oxford research project into lions at the Hwange National Park.

Zimbabwe Wildlife ConservationNo charges were going to "stick" as the parks authority was also involved in the "quota transfer scam, as were some Safari operators. Bronkhorst just happened to get all the social media hype. Parks went through the motions of "prosecuting" him to try and salvage some credibility, as they are the licensing and regulatory body tasked to oversee hunting in Zimbabwe.

L. David KeithNot a peep about the other collared Lions killed in Zim that year? Of course not. None of this BS should have ever happened. Nothing more than media hype to sell their rags. Too many hunters sat stoic with thumb in ass instead of standing up for this client and PH. If we don't call bullshit right out of the gate on these morons, we will lose hunting entirely. Anti's do not care why you hunt; they think meat is made at the grocery store (there goes your food for the table rhetoric); they could care less what you do for "conservation," to them we are blood thirsty killers than want everything that flies, swims, runs or crawls dead and mounted on our walls. You cannot reason with that level of emotional stupidity. Saving kitty cats and puppy dogs is their battle cry, but the man behind the curtain is raising millions upon millions of USD from his minions. This should go away like the plague. I will continue to support legal, law abiding hunters and those that support conservation. LDK

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

Barry GroulxBronkhorst has served his purpose. Everyone has forgotten about "Honest" Ndlovu which is the way Zim works.
