I'm leaving to study at Stellenbosch University and plan on booking a plains game package hunt with Zungah Safaris for impala, kudu, gemsbok, bushbuck, eland, and blesbok. I've never hunted anywhere besides Washington state (high country self-guided mule deer hunting is my passion) and feel I can't let this oppurtunity pass. Does anybody know wether or not this outfit is a good one to go with? They are located in the Eastern Cape and Stellenbosch is north of Cape Town. Any suggestions or comments, good or bad, would be extremely apperciated. Fair chase ethics is very important to me and being a broke college student (I'm taking out a loan to go hunting), I doubt if I will be back anytime soon. Thanks again.

Visit the wineries and have a good time. We were just there last month and enjoyed it a lot.

I don't know anything about this outfitter but most South Africa hunts are high fence. I went on my first Africa hunt this year and every South Africa outfitter I talked to said their hunts were high fence and that all hunts in SA were high fenced.I don't know if this is correct or not.

I had many discussions with my PH about free chase hunts. I did harvest an impala and warthogs on open areas and could have taken a mountain reed buck. My PH finally did say if you wanted an unfenced hunt that kudu, impala, mountain reed buck, duiker, steen buck and warthog did exist free roaming in the area but they existed in much fewer numbers outside the fence and it may take 30 days instead of 7 to find a trophy. When I mentioned that we had seen blesbuck and eland also on the low fence cattle and sheep ranches could these be hunted free chase. The answer was no, many animals blesbuck, eland, zebra, wildebeast and possibly some others wouldn't cross a cattle fence and there were fences every where.

With all of this said I still had an experience of a lifetime. I don't look at these trophy's in the same manner as I look at my no fences trophys but I still look at them with great memories of a fantastic experience.

If you are going to be living there you may want to wait before you book a hunt, you may get a lot better deal after you get to know a few people.

I think hunting animals inside a 25,000 acre enclosure is a personal decision on whether it is ethical or not.

I hunted with WWW.Huntershillsafaris.com in the Eastern Cape and I would highly recommend them. Everything about their operation was great. This hunt far exceeded my expectations.

Maybe blesbok, but I think the rest can easily do a normal cattle fence. Eland can jump out of 8-9 foot high game yards if pushed.
