Poacher shot dead

GAME rangers at Mana Pools National Park shot and killed a suspected poacher and arrested another one after they had shot and killed a sable in the vast park east of Chirundu.

Lenny Mereki (26) of Huyo village under Chief Chundu was shot in the neck and died on the spot after the game rangers at the Mana Pools National Parks intercepted them. Four game rangers reportedly heard some gunshots on August 2 near the Chitake River in the park at around 5 pm and went to investigate — armed with AK47 riffles. When they got to the Mazunga area, they came across three poachers, who refused to surrender.

They opened fire and hit Mereki on the neck and he died on the spot. One of the poachers Shadreck Kamwana (27) was immediately arrested while another man known only as Morgan escaped and the police are looking for him. A search conducted in the area led to the recovery of a carcass of a sable, a bayonet, three jackets, empty five litre containers, cooking tins and tattered clothes. — HR.
