300 Magnum, 375 Magnum, and 6,5x68S. I already have my 550 Gibbs so that would set me pretty nice.

Mike:

The most overlooked yet best all around caliber is a .338...It's about "halfway" between the.300 & .375, and with two different loads, you can just about get the same performance as you would from a .300 or .375, with the one gun, a .338. You can smoke anything in Africa with a .338. It'll wipe out any of the cats with one shot, as well as any plainsgame species. It's more forgiving recoil-wise than a .375 as well

You can flatten any of the buffalo species(i.e. Central African Savannah)with it too. However, of course, it's not legal on Cape Buffaloes or Elephants, (but you could kill either with a .338 in an emergency situation.) There are better choices for those two species.

So to answer your first question, custom gun, preferred caliber---a .338 hands down.

1. .375H&H

2. .404 Jeffery

Don't care much for a .270 or .300, and already have a 7x57...

I love my 300 H&H. I love my 375 H&H. Guess I'd rank them like this;
300 H&H - has more practical application here in NM where I do most of my hunting.
375 H&H - for the buffalo I want to hunt.
264 WM - I like it better than my 270.

I would have a 270 and 375. There would be no need for a 300.

1) 375, then 270... no need for a 300 mag with those two. They overlap enough that the middle option isn't really needed. (Yes, I have one of each).

2) nope

Well, after reading this post and posting. I took all three rifles to the range and put a few rounds through each. It felt great and was a good day. I cannot wait to take each out hunting again.

Already have a .375 and had a .300 H&H. So in order of preference it would be:

1st choice: .270 AND .300 H&H

2nd choice: .416 Rem Mag

375
300 H+H (No not the bee Mike Big Grin)

If restricted to the choices listed

Question #1 375 H&H, 300H&H, and 270 in that order

Question #2 375 H&H, 300H&H, and Either a 9.3X62, or a 280 Rem

However I only use bolt rifles for bad weather, or as a back up so I'll add a third choice

Choice #3 a 450NE double, a 375 Flanged double with a QD scope, a 300 flanged double with a QD scope.

If, however I had to live with but one rifle it would be a Mauser actioned 375 H&H with a QD scope, good iron sights, with a nice classic English style stock, and a synthetic stock for Alaska. The ammo is available in any country where big game is hunted, and will work for everything from dik dik to elephant if need be!

.............. BOOM.............. diggin

I have all three of these and was just the other day pondering, "why do I need anything else" in my battery? Pretty much will go with the "3" plus a .22 rim and of course will keep my 9.3 X 62 as it's to cool to give up. A .22 and .40S&W handgun and I'm done.
