Impressive to say the least! He also has one of a one shot kill on a blesbok at five hundred yards.

Beautiful shot! I have a lot of respect for those Sharps rifles. A couple of years ago I had the opportunity to shoot one of the modern sharps rifles. We set up a piece of pipe about 8" in diameter and a foot long at 500 yards. I'm thinking "no way in Hell". Three of us fired 3 shots each with the Sharps from a seated position with back rest and aided by sticks. The first two guys hit the pipe 3 for 3 and I hit it 2 of 3. We used the superb peep sights on the rifle but regardless this just surprised the heck out of me. I might not try a coues deer with this rig but a elk size animal on that hillside was dead.

I've had 2 Shiloh Sharps (still have 1)and I love hunting with them. They are accurate way outside my capability and the latest which I had built to my specs really handles well....and really nice to look at too.

I too am a convert. I received a beautiful Shiloh-Sharps in 45-110 as a retirement gift and Sharpsguy invited me out to his place to learn the whole "culture" of BP shooting. In just an hour, he had me hitting the 500yard ram target with no problems. I'm off to Wyoming this Sunday for a Bison hunt with it using 540gr Paper Patch and 480gr grease bullets. I'll report back! jorge

jorge is hooked. When he gets back from Wyoming with a bison under his belt, he will be well and truly addicted. I wouldn't be surprised if his 45-110 Sharps makes it to Africa--

Just what I need, another bad habit. I took the twelve step program for boats a few years ago, gave up golf, no gambling, only one redhead (my wife). Please don't tell me that the first hit is free.

Looked like a spine hit, toward the rear. Very nice bang flop.

The hit centered a rib tight behind the onside shoulder. It took out the top of the heart and the big blood vessels and the right lung. For some inexplicable reason it turned and went up and severed the spine right behind the withers.

While it was a very effective shot, I was really surprised and disappointed that the 480 grain flatnosed bullet didn't drive straight through and break the offside shoulder. I have shot four bison, a kudu, several deer and a number of hogs as well as blesbok and warthog with that bullet and this is the first time that it has failed to give straight line penetration and exit.

When I go for Cape Buffalo, you can bet I will be shooting a 511 or 527 grain roundnosed bullet.

It just goes to show you, bullets do weird things sometimes.

Bill is a hell of shot on the range, too. Bill: Wasn't that gun mounted with your copper penny front sight?

The rifle is a Shiloh Number 1 Sporter in 45-70. It is equipped with the standard full buckhorn rear barrel sight and a blade front sight. I replaced the original silver blade with a blade I made from a copper penny, as it gives me a much better sight picture. The rifle is completely unaltered except for the sight change.

The load I used is a 480 grain flat nosed cast lead bullet at 30-1 lead to tin over 70 grains of 3f black powder. It is lit by a CCI BR2 primer. Velocity is 1240 fps with an extreme spread of 8fps and a standard deviation of 2 according to my Oehler 35P.

The barrel has nearly 28,000 rounds through it, and has never seen a jacketed bullet or smokeless powder. It still produces MOA groups if I can see and do my part.

I used it as a test rifle and as my BPCR competition rifle for eight years and decided to take it to Africa. I simply removed the target sights and installed the original barrel sights and it was good to go.

Excellent! A shot and clean kill like that does not happen without a lot of work ahead of time with BP rifles. Congratulations!

Mike--This beard of mine scares ducks and geese to death, so I figured a camo face net wouldn't hurt in Africa. Will you be at DSC or Harrisburg?

Great video of a great shot! No doubt about it, you handle your rifle well.

Looking forward to seeing that Cape Buff footage in the future.I am sure that you and your rifle are up to the task!
