Since I am not a reloader, does anyone know what manufacturers produce solids in 180 grain loads for a 30.06?
Don't think I want to shoot a small African animal with a soft as I saw what my .375 H&H did to a porcupine this past weekend using 285 grain grand slams. You will be pleased to know that it was a one shot, one kill at 60 yards, broke both shoulders so he couldn't run!

www.safariarms.com and Superior Ammunition will commercially load about anything if you just ask. The prices are reasonable, too.

06,

Conley precision ammo will load up solids for you...They loaded up some of my first hunting loads for my Lott...They shot very well..They will even load them down a little for you...By the way was that porky missing all his quills after the shot...Shot a few groundhogs with one...Definately dead...

Wasn't missing all of his quills but his lungs were gone!
Thanks for the ammo info. I thought maybe Federal or Winchester might produce solid loads but haven't found any.

I too do not reload.

I currently use 165 gr. BTSP Federal Premium ammo in my .30-06. I have it zero at 200 yrds. I previously used 180 gr. Remington Core-Lokt. Both loads "blew up" the smaller animals (duiker, steenbok, jackal to name a few).

I bought some 150 gr. FMJ ammo (ex military) from Cheaper Than Dirt. The damn stuff shoots a perfect zero at 100 yrds! The only animal I hit with it was a jackal and the damage was hugely reduced, just two holes.

Just out of curiousity, why not use solids in the .375 for the small stuff. That is a fairly standard routine from what I understand. I don't own a big bore rifle, max out at .338 Win. Mag.

That's a fair question Odie. When I started on this forum I figured I would use my ott6 for everything then as I read and learned I convinced myself (and wife) that I had to have a big bore especially for Eland. Now I have the .375 and love it! It will be my Eland gun this year and the ott6 will be for everything else. This probably makes no sense to anyone but I can't ditch my ott6!!

I am having a new groundhog equalizer put together as we speak, retreever. It will be in .308. I think that, based upon your choice of calibers, my new weapon might be a bit on the weak side.

It makes a lot of sense to me, my friend. If I was limited to owning only one rifle, it would be an ought-six. Not much has come down the pike that has the versatility of this one.
