I have sold my Tuffpak and am going with the Pelican. Which model do you have and how does it work for travel to Africa with 2 rifles?

We've used toughpak, Kalispel, Cabela's and now have 4 Pelican 1750s. Don't need the foam, use your own soft cases for padding, then load clothes/gear. If you have a zippered pocket on your soft cases, put your bolt in there. It is amazing how quickly customs and Police/Immigration personnel wave you by when you tell them the bolt is out.
These cases also hold plenty of gift Asegais for your return. It will be overweight, but your friends and grandkids will love you forever and ever, amen.

I have used both on trips to Alaska and Africa. In my opinion the Pelican is better and easier to use, but there are some nice things about the Tuffpak too-mainly space.

I have never used a Tuffpak, but I own a Pelican case as well as a couple of Bear Track cases. I have used the Bear Track cases twice on trips to Africa and they have performed flawlessly.

I have used the two rifle Pelican [1750?] several times to Africa and here in the US and it has served well as a rifle case. [and last year with only one rifle as stowage for leatherman, candy misc small items too]

You will surely be at MAX weight with two rifles though.

BUT, if your rifles are wood stocked, PLEASE do not take the foam out, use it as designed, with foam [all three pieces, center one cut to fit your rifles] if the case is dropped on end, without adequate cushion between the barrel or butt the compression fracture of the rifles wrist is often a result - I know! [and take the bolts out and cut a slit for them to ride in!]
[oh, and cut the foam so your rifles are Ser.# UP in the case, for inspection!!!]

Others may have different luck - but do you want to bet on it?

When you get your Pelican, go to Hobby Lobby and get a hot wire foam cutter. Then, make a silhouette of your guns and cut them out of the middle layer of foam. The guns should fit tightly without any possibility of movement. Then glue the bottom and middle foam layers together.

If the purpose of a guncase is to get your guns to the destination and home without damage, this is a far better way than the haphazard packing of clothes, etc around your rifle.

I wouldn't use a TuffPak if you gave it to me. Eeker

I've used the 1750 for over 10yrs and countless trips on airlines. Never a problem - I did have handlers toss it out of a jet onto the tarmack once. I've never had two rifles take the weight over the limit. I have no experience with TuffPak, but trust friends that speak highly of it.

Oh and if you want one of those foam cutters, I've got a new one I used just once a couple of months ago- PM me and I get it to you at a discount.

I have both....Tuff-Pak for hunts where I'm taking long rifles, and a Pelican 1650 for doubles and break-downs. Both are great for their intended purposes.

I may have said this before, but having such a case rather than a typical "gun case" is great. If you have a 50 lbs limit per item in the USA, that changes to 20 KG (about 44 lbs) on additional intra-African flights. If one is too heavy, just shift stuff to or from your Tuffy or Pelican to balance it out. Works great.

Since we're on the subject of gun cases, has anyone used the Boyt case I see at SCI Reno? Looks pretty good to me, although the latch design is quite different than others I've seen. Any experience with this one?

Because the Pelican provides superior protection. Nothing else matters. After a trip to RSA mine actually had tire tracks on it. Want to subject a Tuffpack to that abuse?

I carry my double in a Storm Case. The double rifle and the case were well under the weight limit so I had a local upholstery firm sew a 5" tall bag the length and width of the case. All my extra T-shirts and misc. bs was placed in that compartment. It worked fine.

I guess if you want to make a major project out of cutting foam, glueing this and that, extra padding here and there and most likely ending up with and overweight charge as well sounds like the Stormcase is just the ticket? Wink Tuff Pak/Tuff Sack: simple, safe and rigors ready, right out of the box.

I have about a half dozen different hard cases plus another six fitted luggage cases that came with double rifles.

The one Tuff-Pac I have is the short break down case with telescoping handle, and with wheels. The Tuff-pac works fine, but then so do several of the others. The one I have that has been to Africa,Canada, and Alaska more than any of the others is an old all Aluminum "KK Air" with two "L" shaped rods that go through the six latches and and uses small boat hitch locks on each end that aree not easy to pick or cut off. That thing has been beat to hell and back, and is still kicking, after 18 yrs of traveling in Airplanes, and boats, and I have never had any damage in it. It's draw-backs are it is large, and there are no wheels, so must be carried by the luggage type handle in the middle. The other thing about just about all of them other than the Tuff-Pac, they all look like gun cases, so draw unwanted attention.

I don't own a Storm, or Pelican but know a lot of guys who do, and they look good to me.

I've been thinking of building my own line of fitted double rifle cases that are built for air travel and safe for a very expensive double rifles. The outside shell similer to the Americase, but fully fitted inside just like the steamer gun cases for doubles, but far better protection, and lighter.

I now use a Tuff Pak.

On my last Safari I took my wife and 3 Tuff Paks.

I thought that sounded funny when I typed it.

Between the 2 if we took 7 guns.

Two rifles and a Drilling each, plus I took a handgun.
