Is it still 5000 joules in Zim and 5400 joules in Namibia?

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Hi Mike,
Yes, Namibia is 5400 J, without caliber restrictions. As far as I know, Zim is still 5000 J, but with .365/ 9.3 as minimu as well. This let the 9.3x62 JUST make the cut, though I do not think anyone that hunts with one regularly will be under-gunned, as long as very good bullets are paced in the right place.

Karl,

Thanks...I was doing some wildcat research. But interestingly enough factory 9,3x62 ammmo doesn't make the energy level minimum with 286 grn bullets but it does for 250 grn bullets yet I think every one wound recommed 286s over 250s.

bullterrier, divide by 1.357 to get ft/lbs. So it is 3685 and 3979 ft/lbs respectively.

The ones I have shot could neither read nor write - thank God for that, as most died with one shot from a lowly 375. They are supposed to take multiple hits from bigger calibers, according to those in "the know"!

Jbout,

Last time I checked with him, he said Al Gore had gotten the internet to the bush in 2006.

Based on reading AR they all know that a 286 grn 9,3 bullet from factory ammo is deadly but not to worry about a 400 grn .458 bullet that is handloaded to 1900 fps.

He also told me that double rifles scare him but unless that bolt action rifle has been modified to hold 5 down then they don't worry.

Oh yea and at their last quarterly meeting they got a new safety bullet bulletin to be aware of the guys wearing Teva like sandals in the bush cause they really know what they are doing.

Does this mean that my 257 STW with a 100gr TSX at 4300fps is legal for Buff in Namibia.

Can anyone recomend a PH for Buff in Nambia.

Right - I've got it so far. But Who calculates the Muzzle Energy?
Are the authorities happy with the info on the sticker on the ammo packet?
What about roun in more unusual calibres or hot reloads in "different" calibres?

Bullterrier,

The authorities don't really care. It's simply an approach to try and regulate the use of lighter cartridges.

Nobody looks at releads or factory specs or anything for that matter

I suppose this is how some of the (cough, cough) calibre debates for African hunting start Wink

Dr B, yes, technically your .257 STW is legal, but it would be a very stupid PH that will agree to take you on such hunt...
BTW, speak to me if you are interested in buffalo in Namibia. (Not with that caliber though, I will give you the details of a PH that needs "culling" for that.... Wink
ALF, I do not agree with the law, or even with the popular notion that energy kills, I just quoted the law as it is. BTW, there areno legal limit for elephant in Namibia...

400 grain bullet .423" diameter bullet at 2150 fps should give around 5570 joules. Mike, you need a 404 Jeffery.
