Guys/Gals, what are your experiences with Emergency Medical insurance for DG safaris? Is one better than another? Is it worth the cost? Im taking Mama with me to Zambia next summer to the Luangwa Valley for Buffalo, and just wanted to hear from those who have used it before. Thanks!

I bought it but fortunately never had to use it.

This is different that medical evacuation coverage such as Global Rescue.

I have purchased from HCC medical Insurance Services. www.hccmis.com I am looking at the documents for the policy I bought for my girlfriend in July when we visited Argentina. A $1 million policy cost about $29 for 12 days.

I buy it every time I go out of the country.

I think global rescue is the cats p.j.'s. Never used it yet, however, as I understand the policy they will pick you up on site(dust-off) and transport you to whatever hospital you need.

I always buy both the medical and evacuation insurance. It is relatively cheap and worth every penny. I have never had to use either but it sure is good to know it is there.

Global Rescue, without doubt. Their service is superior. I used them to locate a hospital in Tanzania last July. They called us back three times to ensure that I was alright and everything was taken care of. Well worth the money. Highly recommended!

As I understand it, Global Rescue will send an extraction team to get you out where ever you are, period. Like the Navy Seals of the medical evacuation biz.

MedJet will only come to get you at an airport where their aircraft can land or an airport relatively near to your location. You could face the prospect of driving or flying to a pick up point. Of course, in conjunction with MARS (in ZIM) or similar, you might have all your bases covered.

Last I checked, GR was about 3x the cost of MJ due to the differences described above.

The price is well worth the difference in service. GR will pull you out if they can reach you, wherever you are. I was very impressed with their service. I will use them again without reservation, should the need arise.

This is not only important topic for DG safaris trust me a lot of things can go wrong on a plains game safari where you might need this type of insurance...

I also purchase Global Rescue.

I did use them once a couple of years ago in Argentina. Both my kids were severely ill. I called and the response was amazing. Within minutes they had a paramedic on the phone. In short time, they had a specialist from Johns-Hopkins on the phone with very specific instructions. They had a plane lined up to bring us back. Fortunately, my sons got better and evacuation wasn't necessary.

I buy the security upgrade as well. One never knows.

Thank you all- it looks like the Medical Global Rescue is probably the way we're gonna go. I dont think the Valley in Zambia requires the "A-Team" extraction insurance, at least not yet...
