I used a 2.5x leupold on an elephant last year and was happy with my choice. A low powered scope is not a must on elephant but it is mighty handy if you get a chance shot at nice sable(or ???) 100+ yards while carrying your elephant rifle.

"Quick release scope mounts" is the trick! I have a Remington 416, I have Griffin & Howell quick release scope mounts. So if that sable is out there a ways, just slide on the scope and shoot! I do more shooting with out the scope then with. It's nice to travel with the scope off the gun too!
By the way the scope I use is a Nikon 1.5 to 4, don't like the idea of high power scope on big guns....

The whole idea is to get close to a elephant, most of the time it's so thick with trees and bushes you have to get close. Why use a scope? I find using iron sights is by far much better then a scope.
Can the scope!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have an old 3 X Luepold scope on my 450 Dakota on QD mounts. Also have an express site zeroed at 50 and 100 yards.

The field of view of the 3 X is not quite as great as the current day but more fragile 1.5 x 5 Luepold. (Ive broke one before on a light weight .375). Never had a problem with the old 3 X on either 375 improved or 416.

So, is this too much magnification for elephant?

The QD mounts return to a rough zero, like within 2-3 inches but not perfect.

Would you guys use this scope when hunting elephant?

Andy

If you want to use a scope, either a 3x or a 1.5-5 will do fine, just don't get charged. At 10 feet, the field of view will be too small.

Never shot an elephant...don't plan on it...but everything i have read is that 30 yards is long elephant shot...is that true? if so why bother with a scope.

Andy,

I used a 3x M-8 Leupold with a dot reticle this year for elephant in Botswana with excellent results. I've had one of these scopes on one rifle or another for over 20 years and have not found them lacking for any resasonable range shot.

I agree they do not have the field of view or optics of some newer scopes but I find them simple, light, rugged and good enough.

Foolishly I sold a couple of M-8's in the past and if you decide on buying something more modern let me know and I'll probably take the 3x off your hands.

Regards,

Mark
