A gunsmith told me yesterday that if I convert my 458 wm into a Lott, it will not be very accurate when using 458 ammo because of the free bore? Is this true? Thanks

Answer - Jes. OAL Lott - 3.60" Hard to predict and much will depend upon your guns personality. You may only see another MOA. This is nothing to get too concerned about at 50 to 75 yards. [This message has been edited by Zero Drift (edited 02-08-2002).]

Lorenzo, Art Alphin told me once upn a time that shooting factory .458 WM loads is of course possible but he did not encourage it except in emergencies. The shorter case exposes the forward part of the chamber to high temperature powder gases. A lot of this is not good according to Art. How much is a lot, I don't know (pun intended). jim dodd ------------------

Lorenzo, It is true, but at 100 yards the difference of accuracy will be not so big. If you want to shoot over 100 yards, I advice you only to shoot .458 Lott rounds in order to keep good accuracy. I have a CZ rifle .458 Win Mag convert into .450 Ackley, I'm happy with accuracy of both calibers under 100 yards. If you think necessary for you to convert your rifle do it. But the main caliber will be .458 Lott and not .458 Win Mag. : ------------------

Shooting a lot of 458's will cause gas cutting of the chamber sooner or later. It is simular to useing resized 06 brass in a 270 chamber. It is shorter and gas cutting will result and damage the chamber, fact of life... I don't worry about such trivia, if it happened I would rebarrel, but it would take a lot of shooting..My educated guess would be 1000 to a 1500 hot loads. the hotter the load the more damage would result..therefore a 458 at 1900 FPS (you loose a little) would likely not do much damage for several thousand rounds but a 7stw with a short neck could fire hole a chamber in as many as 300 rounds I suspect. Neck erosion 101, strictly theory, on my part. ------------------

I don't think anyone is going to go to the expense, and trouble to build a 458 LOTT, and then shoot 458 Win Mag ammo in it other than in an emergency. The chamber damage is a moot subject, IMO! I have a double rifle that has this type of chamber, a 458 RCBS, and it will still fire 45-70s in a pinch, (Supposedly, I haven't shot any 45-70s in it)if your Wildcat ammo is lost. I suspect the 458 Win Mag in a 458 LOTT chamber would get about the same frequency my double does! Simpley put, not to worry, go ahead and build your 458 LOTT, and don't give the 458 win mag a second thought! ------------------ [This message has been edited by MacD37 (edited 02-11-2002).]
