John DuPlooy is usually booked 2 years ahead in his Tondwa concession in the north of Zambia. As of today he is in position to be able to offer 2 Sitatunga for this year. Dates in August and October are available. The sitatunga and common game(anything but eland, roan, sable, Crawshay's waterbuck) can be hunted on a 10 day schedule. If you want all the species a 14 day booking is required. This is not inexpensive at over $1000 per day but I don't personally know another place were you can expect to find this many major and rare species available on one 14 day safari. John has had 100% succss on sitatunga over 24" and has taken 2 this year over 28". Two years ago we had a client kill an honest 50" sable in Tondwa. Roan average 26"-27". The Crawshay's waterbuck is a litte smaller than the common variety but is only avaialble in Zambia. Other rarities like blue duiker and puku are also there with hippo and buffalo present but the hunting is not easy. This would really be a heck of a safari for almost all the most desirable big antelope in southern Africa. Any of the above can be combined with a short add-on for the lechwes or fishing on the Zambesi. I persoanlly had this booked for '07 but sold it to an AR member so I could chase lions again. I'm always around if you have questions or just need some more info. Mark MARK H. Mark, Very intersting to me... I hunted there back in 1980. I think it was only open for a few years back then. I took a really good Lichtenstein's Hartebeest, 41" Sable and a 29" Roan. An average Puku, Common Reedbuck, and Cape Buffalo (tough back then too...we only found one herd). The outfit I was with had hunted there the previous year too but wasn't rigged up for Sitatunga. There where many, many Roan there then. The Sable there were all a dark mahogany rather than black. This includes the bulls. I understand this carries through into TZ and the few found in Katanga Province just across the border in what weas then Zaire. I'd like to see a picture of that 50" Sable if you have it. Sounds like we were just scratching the surface of the place. Rich Elliott Rich Elliott Ethiopian Rift Valley Safaris | |||

Rich, The sitatunga now are really the draw. The reeds are not as tall as Bangweulu so particularly August onward the hunting is very good as the swamp dries. Your trophies from Tondwa are about what can be expected with exception of the roan. 29" Very nice! Adam has the pictures of the big sable in the Safari Trackers Brochure. The client was Hank Crouse and his smile tells it all. If I hadn't finally got my sitatunga out of Zambia after 6 years I would have never given this safari up. This is a very unique and interesting place to hunt. I understand it actually is an ancient volvcanic crater and the camp is situated right on the rim. Mark MARK H. For anyone who might be interested, there is an excellent article in the recent Safari magazine on page 58 about a similar safari with the same PH. A very impressive sitatunga was taken that was measured to be the new #13 Zambian sitatunga. Sure wish I could go!! Sounds like an excellent safari. I just read a bit more about it on the website. When we ( me, my wife, and friends, Dr.& Mrs. Yoos) hunted there in 1980 we landed at Kasaba Bay and took a boat across Lake Tanganyika. That saved a bit of time and also made for a very interesting boat ride. There were elephant along the shore as well as hippo. The main "industry" there was kapinta fishing and there were several remote villages with their whole shorelines covered with drying kapinta (kind of a fresh water sardine). We had to wait a day at Kasaba bay for the plane to pick us up so we fished a bit. I caught a 125 lb Nile perch tnat day fishing off the bottom of 400 feet deet water. What a trip! Rich The fishing is still there and Laura DuPlooy will try to arrange it if anyone is interested. Mark MARK H.
