We dehorned our Rhinos and they still killed her. One female dead is a huge loss to the population.

Why would they do that? Will there still be a part of the horn in the skull after you remove the external part?

IMHO Far too many antis see us as no different than the criminals that commit these atrocities.
They are blinded by their feelings to see the good that hunters do to preserve wildlife.

Simply because ignorant superstitious people are willing to pay astronomical sums for rhino horn.
"The country's (Vietnam and also China) appetite for rhino horn is so great that it now fetches up to $100,000/kg, making it worth more than its weight in gold. (Horns average around 1-3 kg each, depending on the species.)"

And don't forget the collaborators living in those countries too!

Out of Africa and their criminals come to mind!

Nothing new here.

I have been verbally beaten up many times for stating the obvious. Asian culture and demand are the nemesis for so many species, including the big cats, bears, anything that grows ivory, and all species of rhino. Hell anything that factors into their medicinal and cultural beliefs.

Until you cut off the head of the dragon, it will ever be thus.

When they say they dehorn the rhino they do not extract it like a tooth. It is cut off close too the base of the horn. So there is still some horn left attached to the skull. It is like a finger nail. It grows back after a few years. That is why many propose legal trade in horns. You could "harvest" rhino horn every few years.
The poachers will kill a three month old calf to get the small piece of horn that it has, even if it is only 50 grams. Like Saeed said, Rhino poaching and horn trading involves so many people on so many levels. From ranch owners, police, nature conservation officials, airport staff, customs officials etc. Even some professional hunters

Heart breaking ! With all the state of the art anti-poaching equipment and trained guards this happens. The killing of the calf too gives me the idea that the perp/s did not want the juvenile to starve to death...?

Humans can't stop killing humans in large numbers, what hope anyone got they will stop killing rhino.

The human race has been decimating or totally wiping out all kinds of species for thousands of yrs,
(for one reason or another),...till eventually probably even itself some time in the future.

Another explanation I have heard, it keeps the poacher(s) from having to track that rhino again.

While it all makes a heart rending post for the ant-hunting facebook crowd, it's nothing I haven't seen in the bush dozens of times in one form or another.

Until we have the balls the deal with the Chinese (which we won't) this will just continue.

The most unfortunate aspect is that legitimate hunters are no different in the eyes of the antis than these poachers.

So while truly sad, this Facebook drama helps no one. Not the Rhino. Not Hunters. And most especially it doesn't do shit about the Chinese.

Bill and Hillary have been dealing with the Chinese for quite a while. maybe their help should be sought, since they are such good friends of Chinese in high places rotflmo jumping

There is only two markets for this. Address those cultures. Stop the buying, stop the poaching for profit.

The main objective for rhino horn dealers now is the extinction of the species. When there are no more rhino, the value of the stockpile of horn will escalate dramatically.

don't blame the market. blame the inability to supply the market. you can't beat the market. it is amazing that the capitalist can't figure it out. if only the poachers can make a profit, the poacher are the only one incentivized to continue their behavior.

instead of telling people/culture how they should go about their lives supply it and and profit from it.

it is not the "buyers" who are to blame, it is the inability to except there is a market and supply it.

never fever though 99% +/- of all species that have ever existed existed on the planet have gone extinct.

acting like a tree hugger is ok apparently, as long if your tree is a rhino.

lets be honest 99% of people truly do not care or think about the rhino, they are merely discussed by how humans can act so brutally.

Just reality, nothing more nothing less.

Poison the horn. Let it go into the market so that everyone who partakes dies. Would that decrease the market? It would, one way or the other.

Try that method with the (much smaller national population) illicit drug market in the USA first,
and tell me how it goes,
before one goes trying similar approach in collective Asian countries with some 1.5 billion population.

You will not dent the demand for Rhino horn accept that fact.

Even other animal horn ground-up and sold as Rhino dust, is fetching $15,000 a kilo!

that shows the serious amount of consumer demand for real Rhino horn.
Unfortunately, the market supply of non-Rhino horn for $15,000/kilo,.. has only had the effect of further
fuelling a widespread increased demand, for real Rhino horn.

The people selling the $15,000/KG gear, are likely making much more money that the guys selling
real Rhino horn, simply cause of the sheer amount of customers and the volume they are selling.
