Immagine this: The Govermnet of Tanzania has decided to auction a hunt for the Big 5 in the Ngorongoro Crater. This is to be a "as long as necessary" hunt offering 3 x buffalo, 1 lion, 1 leopard, 1 black rhino and 1 elephant. Below is a sample of what to expect: Buffalo # 1  Buffalo # 2  buffalo # 3  Lion # 1  Lion # 2  Leopard  Black rhino  elephant # 1  elephant # 2  and just cause they are feeling generous they will throw in a Robert's Gazelle (Unique to tanznaia) for free! My PH on my last Tanzania hunt, Brian Van Blerk, and I had this exact conversation. He says for the ele at #100 per side and the rino plus the other trophies, all could be taken in one day, the hunt would be around $ 750,000.00 to 1 million. And it would sell in one day. If Texans were really smart, they would have the big 5 somewhere near Austin and do the same thing. The Ngorogoro crater "high fenced sanctuary" (yes I know there is no fence there) is a open air zoo. Those animals are not "gun smart" and the guy should be able to kill all 5 in about 2 days. I assume the hunter will shoot them from the truck. No thanks for me. This won't be a hunt. | |||

It's a world heritage site......and a paradise...... and incidentally has a few lodges on the rim, one of which is (or at least was for many years) on the list of the the top 10 best hotels in the world. The Ngorongoro Crater Lodge just has to be seen to be believed. It's truly exquisite. If you're ever in Tanzania and want to celebrate a special occasion that's where you need to go. It ain't cheap but it's worth every penny. | |||

In my opinion if one travels all the way to northern Tanzania and does not take in Ngorongoro they have done themselves a great injustice. Whatever it costs is well worth it. Sadie and I were very impressed. Actually everybody I've spoken to about the Crater has had the same reaction. WOW!!! One full day in the Crater is enough but it may be the wildlife experience of a lifetime. Mark MARK H. Problem with the crater is, no surprise, too many tourists. It's a herd of open-roofed safari vehicles clustered at the gate at the foot of the crater rim at 0-dark-thirty waiting for opening minute; a cluster of such vehicles at the hippo pool for lunch where the black-shouldered (or is it yellow-billed) kites are snatching chunks of chicken from slow-moving tourists' hands, and dust plumes looking like small dust devils all the day long as vehicles surge from one herd/pride/sighting of the BIG FIVE or less prestigious critter to the next. It is, in fact, a zoo and not a place to think of a hunt. But it's the only unfenced place I know of to see all FIVE in the same day. Regards | |||

Hard to believe that John Hunter turned down a 99 year lease on a big chunk of the crater for 45 rupees a year. In his book "Hunter", he says he discussed it with his wife, but they decided it was so inaccessable that they would never use it! | |||

Some pics of the Ngorogoro Crater Lodge.... if you need to earn some brownie points with your better halves - this IS the place to take them. It's the most bizarre experience to be in the middle of Africa and walk into this incredible opulence...... quite what the Masai must think of it all, I can't imagine! Hope they're the right size Terry!    | |||
