More evidence that Selous lion do develop substantial manes if allowed to mature to their full potential contrary to what many PHs and outfitters have preached to clients over the decades.

Superb. Which areas in the Selous were these taken? Currently what success rate are you looking at?

Hi Andrew,

One lion was taken along the Rufiji river (Northern Selous) and the other around Madaba area (Central Selous) according ot the titles on the pics.

I don't think many are keeping stats on lion sucess rates since the intro of the 6 year rule - if they are they are not publicising as often as before because they are definetely not 100% anymore like they used to be. Cool

What is certain is that the vast majority of lion taken in TZ in recent seasons are under 6, plenty PHs have been fined and a few may have even "striked out" (3 fines and you lose your license!). Personally, I would guess that countrywide success rate is under 15% for a 6 year old lion. I doubt it is any higher in any country that still allows lion hunting and applies the same rule.

Plenty PHs are still "learning" to determine a 6+ lion and for sure there are lot's of underhanded deals taking place to cover mistakes up stir

Thanks Bwana and good to know that there are still some who will pay good money for a stab at a great cat.

Bwana - Its been awhile my friend, hope all is well?

I too hunted TZ last August in the Rukwa Game Reserve, saw lions, passed lions, one of which was a true monster lion - but he had cubs.

I agree totally with your assessment of success rates in TZ lately. I am again doing a Tanzania lion hunt in July 2015. Recently (yesterday) I was asked what I thought my odds of actually shooting a lion were? I answered, 10% - 20%.

Make no mistake, if I honestly think I am looking at a legal/ethical shooter - I am gonna shoot him in a heart beat. Frankly however, I think I will have a great 3 week buffalo/hippo safari - and hopefully get to interact with some lions! Looking forward to it.

Sadly, many PHs want the trophy fee rather than let the lion mature. I shot a lion in the Selous in 2006. My PH told me it was a 5 1/2 year old adult male and his mane was poor due to his life in the thorns. Later, others who saw my photos told me it was a 2 1/2 year old sub adult who should have been allowed to mature. Live and learn, I guess.

The ole "bush lion" excuse huh?? Smiler

Funny, you don't hear about the "bush lion" much anymore?? Apparently they have all died, or quit living in the thick bush? Cool

I will say though Cal, I do believe the vast majority of PH's all across Africa have a different philosophy now. Most do their very best to target obviously mature males. We have all come a long ways since 2006, and definitely for the better.

Great post Mich!!! Plenty of evidence that mature males from the Selous have good manes from all the pics taken in the '80's and before.

Maybe TZ will get the ele poaching thing under control before it's too late. Ele, with their long lifespans, will have a more difficult road to recovery though I am afraid.

Yes it may be. And, I have his conversation of video tape telling me of the lion!
