Our tax dollars at work-
Quote from "Nature" article
[Even though it is illegal to kill an elephant in Africa, people continue to slaughter the mammoth beasts -- if not for ivory, then for revenge.]

Thank goodness they don't let facts stand in the way of the truth over there at PBS.

What PBS and similar liberal media outlets want is the elimination of sport hunting. This old man may be simply guilty of being old and pessimistic - but I think they are winning. Look at the "wild life" organizations (that oppose hunting) that get millions of dollars in support from the various "Foundations" that were never funded by their founders for such purposes. (Think Ford Foundation for one example) Do you think that an organization of nature illiterates (and loons) like PETA could prosper and continue in a society that wants to support sport hunting? Look at the rise of "vegetarians". When I was a boy (and I'm 78), vegetarians were regarded as some kind of peculiar sect of near lunatics - (and, please don't give me the "cholesterol" argument. If there was such a close relationship between fatty meat and heart trouble, the Eskimos would have disappeared 2 thousand years ago) Today, any supermarket has whole aisles catering to them. One more anti -hunting group. I challenge you to check your local school and see if there are any gun clubs. The mere mention of the word "gun" sends nationally unionized teachers into hysterics. I'm just mentioning a few of the factors that are inexorably closing in on sport hunting. When I was a boy in NY, I could step outdoors and begin hunting within a five minute walk from the house for small game, birds (ruffed grouse and pheasants) and for deer - and I didn't live in some "howling wilderness". I lived less than 60 miles from NY City in dairy farm country. Fight as hard as you can for sport hunting but I just don't think that it will come back as I knew it -when "guns" were a completely normal part of every country household -and a lot of city homes, as well. I hope I'm wrong and that it's just an old man's pessimism. Believe me, I want to be wrong!

Hi Gerry,
I have a whole lot of respect for you and the rest of my brothers here on AR. However, I have to disagree with those who say that the anti's have us on the ropes. The same goes for the second amendment, even though the SCOTUS decision was close we one that battle too. I believe 37 of the 50 states have excellent concealed carry programs.
As far as sport hunting goes it hasn't been as good in my neck of the woods for generations. Deer, Elk, Moose, Sheep and Antelopes herds are thriving. You can purchase 3 Elk tags a year in Colorado! I just did a google search for hunter/conservation/preservation organizations and came up with several pages of information. In Colorado hunters and fisherman are the biggest contributors to the state coffers. Yes, even bigger than skiers.
I can get on an airplane in Denver and be on the hunting fields of 7 continents in 24 hours.
You are right about local schools supporting the shooting sports but that may change. My daughter belongs to a trap club at Colorado State that was organized 3 years ago. Several kids there keep their hunting rifles and shotguns in a safe at the dormitory.
