Anyone used the 235 gr Speer bullet on plains game. Does it hold together? I am thinking of using it in a 375/444 which is a bit slower than the full house H&H.

Hi Russ,

no problem at all. I used that bullet in my .375 H & H and I shot plenty of kudu and bushbuck with it. Also some warthog, bushpig and impala. Excellent!

The 235 grain Speer opens very rapidly at 375 H&H velocity, even on whitetails. It holds together better at 375x2.5 Flanged NE velocity. Keep it under 2500 fps, and you should be OK on small and medium plains game (go with a tougher bullet on anything larger than kudu). If you want a lightweight non-premium bullet that holds together better than the Speer (even at reduced velocity) you might consider the 225 Hornady (designed for the 376 Steyr), or the 250 Sierra BT. For a little more expensive lightweight the 250 Swift A-Frame (my personal favorite) and the 260 Nosler Partition will work well at 375/444 velocity, even on larger plainsgame.

I used the 235 last season on whitetail and elk and had quite a few bullet failures -core separation, blowups etc. My loads were probably too hot but as I see it the Sierra is not a good hunting bullet. IN the future Ill be loadiing Hornaday 270 gr bullets for my non-premium loads and Woodleighs for the African hunts.

I have killed a few whitetail deer with it at about 2500fps. Shots were between 40 and 100 yards. The 235 Speer performed very well. No deer so much as took a step and meat damage was minimal. My Brother shot a wild pig [about 200 lbs] at about 40 yards with the same 2500fps load. The bullet hit the pig just to the right of center chest [the pig was facing him at a slight angle] the bullet exited the back of the rib cage. The pig went straight down.
The key with this bullet may be to keep IMPACT velocity under 2500fps for best results.

Not for nothing but no wonder you guys are always advocating such large calibers for D/G, look what you mopes are using for whitetails!!!!
I dunno know about you guys, must be a freudian case of penis envy or something...

I prefer the 235 gr. X bullet as it will not come apart.

One of the best light weight bullets I have used on deer and even on elk is the 250 gr. Sierra in the .375...It sure did surprise me as I am not a Sierra fan when it comes to hunting bullets, but so many locals showed up at the coffee shop with these beauties perfectly expanded in there pokets that I had to give it a try and it sure works and comes to rest on the off side skin perfectly expanded with an ocassional pass throuh....Another good light bullet was the 240 gr. Trophy bonded..I have seen them used on plainsgame and they sure did work well...

That said, I still like a partition 300 gr. or a 350 gr. Woodleigh, cuz I like TWO holes everytime...My head is made up on that'un....
