Although not a "traditional" type of hunt....I found this video quite interesting. It is a fellow from the UK who is hunting Mt. Reedbuck with a Benjamin Rogue .357 caliber air rifle. In one of his other videos, he states the ammunition he is using is a 145 gr. Nosler Partition bullet with polymer tip (didn't know there was such a thing).

Anyway, this gun did extremely well....and I was impressed with the performance. Even if this is not your cup of tea, I think you will enjoy the video. It is well done.

I once had to shoot a Mtn Reedbuck four times with a .375. That it was loaded with solids was part of the issue, but me thinks an air rifle a bit light for anything bigger than rats and mice.

watch the video and you might change your mind, Will. interesting viewing. the same guy also took an impala and a red hartebeest with the Rogue. as an aside i have taken a number of wild hogs and coyotes with a .22 cal air rifle although it is a bit of a special purpose gun producing a lot of power and i limit myself to head shots inside of 50 yards. always DRT.

I know it WILL work and I was impressed that the projectile went through the animal, but different strokes for different folks. That said, I wouldn't shoot big game animals with a .22 rifle either.

Still, I would love to have one of these high performance air rifles for back yard vermin.

around my place pigs and coyotes are front yard vermin. i generally shoot them off the front porch. all my air guns have silencers, so the dogs don't even wake up when i shoot something. neighbors aren't an issue( nearest one is 1/4 mile away but it is nice to be able to sort out a problem in near silence. since the guns are PCP's with no recoil, it's easy to see the pellet strike.

Do airguns meet the ballistic requirements some countries in Africa have? Just wondering?

That video and several others were a real eye opener. Some .22 super air rifles shoot accurately at 200 meters!

This really puts a damper on those who keep telling us "bigger is better".

I have not use air rifles, but have shot a number of animals we have here with standard velocity 22 rim fire. I normally put the shot by the ear hole, and the animal just drops as if someone has yanked a carpet from underneath it.

my most powerful air rifle has the power of a .22 standard velocity round- and yes, when you put it in his ear hole- GOODBYE!

Here in the UK there has been a great increase in recent years in air rifle development probably brought about by our strict firearms laws.
The irony is that many are now more expensive than full bore firearms and they have pumped up the operating pressures so much that they have to be licensed as a firearm.
When you visit a hunting exhibition the air gun section is bigger than the shotgun and full bores combined.

i have a high powered air rifle (FX royale is the brand) i have it on most elephant hunts and also in tanzania while i am there ...its great fun for birds for the pot when things are a little slow ,in fact its the perfect riofle for that as there is absoulutely no noise at all , so no disturbance to the area , we all know that birdshooting with a .22 or shotgun is death to an elephant hunt !!!! its deadly accurate up to about 70 yards which is amazing for an air rifle , i have never shot an animal with it though ...

FX is a airrifle from Sweden and I agree with Ivan its very accurate. You can take down alot of small critters with that rifle, and probably a reedbuck also within range.

i have 5 UK made Daystates, all FAC- the cheapest one was $1200- other 4 were well over $1700( up to $2400). they are most definitely not the Air rifle you remember from your childhood NOR ARE THEY TOYS. all operate of pressures of 3300psi.

Many years ago, I tried a Daystate air rifle on a piece of steel plate. Admittedly not very thick.

It went straight through, while a .22 short did not!!?

Not familiar with reedbuck. But the rogue air rifle pretty much is ballistic twin of 38 special. 38 special is plenty capable of taking various sized critters with head shots. Keep it off heavy bone heart lung shots at close range it should have no trouble up to around 200 pound critters.
