Big African Wildcat
Anybody like to hunt the small cats? On my hunt in 2004 in Namibia, I saw several caracal and serval, but had no interest in them at the time. I had no idea they were so hard to get. This past trip, they were quite scarce, but my friend's asked me if I wanted to try calling one in. Instead, we called in this huge African Wildcat. Was gorgeous with the perfect coloration and tail, and those great long legs, so down he went. My PH friends were speechless at the size of him, and knew it would score well.

Just got my official score back on my Wildcat, and was pleasantly surprised to find it at #6 SCI. Was a really fun hunt with a predator call, and used one of my friends 222's. That type of hunting could become habit-forming!

Nice cat, Blank.

I, too, heard it was rare to see caracals during hunting (daylight) hours and we were fortunate enough to see this one. It was sneaking away from feeding on leftovers of a cheetah kill. I hit it in the lower midsection and blew out all of its stomach and liver and still it ran about 200 yards and into a cluster of acacia. By the time we found where it had gone it was dark. We came back in the morning to get it out.

The pic is of my 13 yr old son (left) and the PH's son.

Hope this pic post works.

I'll try again. This is the first time I've used Photobucket.

BTW, the caracal was a Gold Medal but I don't have the skull measures right on hand.

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."

Nice cats. I haven't tried predator calling in Africa yet but it would be fun. The PH's get a bit nervous about it.

Super Wild Cat, and far larger than the two I have seen in SA.

Thanks for the comps. Measure them just like all the others - length and width of the skull. This one ended up totalling 7 10/16".

We were a little uneasy calling when there were lions, leopards, and hyenas around, so we had my 375 H&H along with the 222 and 17 HMR. We found a couple zebra kills in the area later, so know they were there.

NamibiaHunter: Very pretty Caracal; I love their ears and facial distinction.
