I am seriously contemplating an archery safari for my 50th birthday next year. This will be my first trip to Africa and I want to do it right but also have to take cost into account. I am primarily interested in Eland, Kudu, Zebra, Warthog and Leopard. Would it be feasible to hunt these in the same area? Would bow hunting Leopard be legal? I would also really love to hunt Lion with a bow but I am afraid that may be out of my price range but it will be a consideration. How long of a hunt should I book? How far in advance can I and should I book? It looks like South Africa would be the most economical. Are there any requirements for bows in South Africa? Any reccomendations on set up? I would like to use my Hoyt Charger @ 65 lbs and use Easton FMJ arrows with DRT broadheads. Any suggestions?

Go to Tholo in Botswana and shoot plains game with a bow.

A real wild lion hunt and leopard with a bow is a serious endeavor and I would not do it on my first safari unless I had unlimited time and funds.

Consider Namibia. A decade ago they were toying with the idea of allowing bow hunting for leopard. They issued some permits. Don't know how it ultimately turned out. But if you can bow hunt leopard in Namibia, I think you could meet all of your other needs as well.

It is , to the best of my knowledge , still legal to hunt Leopard in South Africa with the bow. I speak for the Limpopo province. It requires a special permit which your outfitter applies for.

We have some outfitters that specialize in bowhunting and some of them have become experts on hunting leopard in this manner.

We have a very healthy Leopard population and some monsters are taken every year. South Africa has lots of plains game in large numbers and this equates to lots of cats.
All the other plains game species you require should not be a problem on a hunt like this.

You're welcome to PM me for references on whom to contact.

Happy hunting

leopard hunting can take up alot of yoir day checking and hanging baits. Not to mention shooting the baits. Archery hunting takes up more time per animal kiled than rifle hunting.
I believe I would leave the leopard hunt out on your first trip and enjoy a great plains game hunt.
Most leopard hints are 14 day hunts.
Nambia is great, aouth africa will have the largest bariety of species, domt forget some places in Zim as well. Zim would be more expensive

Leopard with a bow might be to much to ask for your first safari. You can forget the lion. It would be very expensive and not advisable to someone who has not hunted dangerous game before.

That being said South Africa is your best bet for Leopard.

Lots of good options for bow hunting plains game. Bowsite has a big Africa section that has all the info you need for bowhunting Africa.

One thing I would recommend you consider. Be careful about who you pick versus what your idea of Africa is. I personally was not satisfied with a ranch bow hunt. I doubt I will ever go on another safari where atleast some of the big 5 are present. No offense to the ranch guys but I need the big nasty's around to complete my idea of Africa.

I have walked in the foot prints of the elephant, listened to lion roar and met the buffalo on his turf. I shall never be the same.
