I have a extra 30 cal barrel, and a Montanna 1999 on the way (mag bolt face & long box). I have a 375 and a 416 already. Do I go with the old classic or the more marketable win mag?

A long box for a 300 WM would be a very good thing. Do 300 RUMs feed?

Go with the 300 H&H.

You already have it's brother. You need to complete the set. Go with the H&H.

If you are looking for preformance both cartridges are about equal. If you are a reloader the 300 H&H will need more trimming of the cases. If you are not a traditionalist I think a 300 WM would be more practical. 3100 fps for a 180 gr. from a 30-06 length action is hard to beat.

The whole idea of a .300 Win Mag was to duplicate the performance of the bigger H&H round in a standard length action but since you already have a long box why settle for the duplicate when you can have the real thing?

.300 H&H and .375 H&H would make one heck of a rifle pair.

The .300 H&H gets my vote. Waht could be better than taking a pair of them on you next trip to Africa?

I agree the .30 super is a fine medium gun that will probably be used the most. When handloaded it equals the Win. offering and comes close to Wby. The most important thing is its long tapered case, that is designed to extract easier than the straight bodied numbers do. Charlie

The old H&H not only shoots hard and accurate but sits in the gun cabinet with a tinge more pride than the more common cartridge.

If Charm is important go the .300 H&H..............if your practical go for the win mag.

I have both - it's a toss-up for me!

I have been shooting a 300 H&H for 40 or so years, love it back when, still do, its one of my favorite hunting rifles, It shows the wear, void of blue, stock is now exhibition driftwood. Still shoots under a half inch at 100 most of the time and all weights of bullets to the exact same POI for the most part. An exceptional rifle....

The 300 H&Hs long neck lends itself better to the 200 and 220 gr. bullets and with heavy bullets it is only exceeded by the 300 Wby if you handload...

As we all know the case shape lends itself to good positive feeding, but more important than feeding may be how it lends itself to extraction with an overload or faulty case..

Both are great rounds, my youngest son shoots 300 Win magnums that I built them, and it certainly is a fine rifle...

Take your pick, it won't make a heck of a lot of difference one way or the other...

If your ammo goes missing on the way to Africa, are you going to find 300 H&H ammo there?

Just curious. You can really only find factory 300 H&H ammo in the big wholesale type stores in Canada.

If my suitcase is lost the last thing on my mind would be the ammo.
Some airports will require that the bolt is in the suitcase and not in the rifle. If your suitcase is lost so is your bolt and also the ammo.

In the few stores I visited in RSA the most common ammo was by far the .300 Win Mag...and not too much the .300 H&H

300 H&H is certainly available in most shops here in RSA, PMP make the stuff, using their Pro-Amm bullet which is a "not quite premium" class of bullet but certainly is serviceable. The 180gr is a surefire killer on anything in the kudu class. I would not use it on anything bigger.

I'd go with the H&H, it is certainly the sexiest looking Magnum cartridge out there...

I have a 300 H+H, besides the fact that it is the classic 30 cal round. it is also very accurate with bullet weights from 125 grains to 250 grains. I never got the same flexibility from the 300 WM-- generally it shot only weights of 150 to 200 grains well.

Ammo can be found anywhere and everywhere.

I will always choose a classic when a choice like this comes along.

A long box WM can have some advantages being able to keep the bullets out of the powder space but the classic H&H doesn’t have many down sides other than needing trimmed more often.
