Lets say by chance your PH emails you 1 day before you are to depart to Africa on your plains game hunt and mentions that there is a pretty good chance that you'll get to tag along for a day or two on an elephant hunt if you want to... Wink

You are packed and ready to go. Do you think that a 375 with solids would be good enough for a 'just in case' type situation? Or do you guys think I/he/them Wink Would be better off leaving it in the truck so I, uh I mean the "guy", can run faster? Big Grin

Just wondering... only two days till arrival... Smiler

Take the 375H&H and use the PH's gun if necessary!

I've only hunted elephant once, and it was with a .375H&H (Tuskless ele hunt). Although not an optimal calibur, it is at least adequate. And if I were you/him/them Wink I would rather be armed with a rifle I know, than borrow some other bigbore I'm not familiar with.

And if it's for nasty, tuskless cow ele, train to run fast! Big Grin

Not ment to confuse anyone. I will be just along for the ride so to speak... Another hunter will be do'n the kill'n. Just wondering if it would be pertinent to be "pack'n" or just lace up my running shoes reeeeeal tight? Smiler

Ivan,

I understood that you'd just be tagging along, but I see my post was a little vague.

If given a choice in elephant country, I'd choose to be armed, rather than unarmed and thus defenceless!

I would definately take your 375 and have a gun in hand to go along with your hunting parties guns. Remember running shoes are not always the answer when you have a good PH and staff.
Your PH will let you know what is to be expected and in what situation you will be "LIVE" fire if it happens. With running shoes only you still cannot be the slowest one there even with great shoes!!!!!!!!

In the words of Tony - "You are taking a .375? Oh, that's it. You gonna DIE!"

I got my ele with a Model 70 in .375 H&H and it worked. It was not great, now looking for a 458 Lott, but it worked.

Better to be underarmed than unarmed.

I'd take the 375 and carry it on a sling while using a cam corder to film the hunt. That would be more valuabe in the long run. The client and PH will both have adequate weapons to handle the situation.

I think you should always carry your gun when in an area with dangerous game, even if you are just tagging along (i.e., not the shooter).

For example, we were hunting crocs down along the river in Tanzania and we ran into hippos, which were out of the water in tall grass. We were lucky we weren't between them and the water. Guess who didn't have his gun - "me" and I felt kind of helpless (couldn't quite defend myself w/ the video camera). We would leave my wife in camp about every 5th day, so she could take a break and she always took her rifle where ever she went.

Your 375H&H w/ solids will allow you to take care of yourself - you can't always count on someone else to be there in all situations.

I like 465's idea. Just being on the hunt if they score will be quite an experience. To get it on film would be great. What an added bonus to your safari!!!

According to the experts ,and iam not one of them, all you need is a 375 for everything!!!! [which then makes you wonder why they ever made anything bigger ]your PH will take care of you anyway, and is a quicker second shot than any double rifle is or bolt action

Like I said a 375 is fine for those that can shoot....

But, I can shoot, and I want my .470 double on elephant everytime...

If my double weighed 7.5 lbs. and had no recoil, then I would use it for everything...but alas my new walk about behind hunters is a 8 Lb. 10.75x68 with a ghost sight stroked with 350 ge. Bridger flat nose solids at 2350 FPS...or 400 gr. Woodleigh softs at 2120 FPS....

I figure a .375 stroked with those wonderful 350 gr. Woodleighs would be an awesome choice for you, in both solid and PPs..the RN work well also but they are softer than the PP...

Hell , the .375 was all Harry Manners used! In a pre-64 Winchester Model 70 no less. If you're comfortable with her, take her. Ol' Harry took more eles than all the posters on this forum combined. Proper bullets are the key and Northforks, Bridgers, Barnes and Woodleigh solids would be my choice.

A .375 is perfect for a spectator. Big Grin

When I carried one in the near neighborhood of elephants, well . . . it was better than a sharp stick.

My awareness of my own mortality is strong enough that I would prefer to carry something something bigger than a .375, but if just tagging along on someone else's hunt where the chance that I will fire a shot is next to zero, a .375 would be fine.

"I know, from using the rifle myself, that the .375 Magnum can safely and satisfactorily be taken against any animal anywhere in Africa. This is not written on the strength of shooting a few beasts with a new weapon and being pleased with the result. I have had three of Holland's .375 Magnums: the first bought secondhand in the early days of my experiments; after using it extensively I discarded it in order to try other weapons; Later, after I had been through the list of it's contemporaries, I bought another, also secondhand, so as to check up on the notes that I had made on the first one's behavior. So satisfied was I that I then discarded it and had Messrs. Holland & Holland build me up a new one - the one that I am using at present. I have fired more .375 Magnum ammunition in my life than any other calibre: over 5,000 rounds at game, including all kinds of African game from elephant downwards.

"I kept no record of the number of elephant and buffalo shot with the first two .375 Magnums; but I distinctly remember the day when this one dropped it's hundredth elephant; and in addition this same one has accounted for somewhere between 400 and 500 buffalo, besides a number of rhino, hippo and lion, and of course, a fair quantity of lesser game. So that both it and I are thoroughly accustomed to each other's little ways. I am not suggesting for a moment that it alone is a suitable weapon for the professional elephant hunter; and naturally I have other much more powerful weapons for use under certain conditions. But what I am suggesting is that personal experience has shown me that it is an eminently safe, sound and intensely-satisfactory weapon to take against any animal anywhere if the sportsman does not want to be bothered with a number of different weapons."

Andy!

Hunting cows in the jess can get very hairy. I would carry a gun load plus 20 in a belt carrier.
