I have been looking at Barnes & Noble, Walden, etc.. in search of a book that gives good descriptions and photos of the various African game animals. So far I havent found one that is worthwhile. For a newbie like me all the different ---bucks and ---boks gets very confusing. Plus it seems there are many different subspecies of different animals. If you have any reccomendations for book and source it would be very appreciated.

Midway USA (www.midwayusa.com) has "The Perfect Shot" by Kevin Robertson. Good for showing animals and shot placement. For identification, the Audubon Society's "Field Guide to African Animals" is okay.

Not as generous on my part as you think. M1Tanker just gave me a bolt, firing pin spring, and trigger for an old M98 of my Dad's. Now that is generous. I'm trying to repay, that's all.
(1) as has already been mentioned, the 'Audubon Society's Field Guide to African Animals' is a very useful book (it has good color plates and short thorough narritives on individual species, this book is also small and durable and easy to carry;
(2) Richard D. Estes (1991) 'The Behaviour Guide to African Mammals,'---this is an excellent but serious textbook reference...illustrations are black and white drawings--the descriptions it presents on lion, leopard, and buffalo behaviour is worth the cost of the book.
and (3) the recently published 'The Perfect Shot: Mini Edition for Africa,' which can also be easily carried in the field, is also an excellent book.
These are all fun books to look at and read.

Another vote for the National Audubon Society Field Guide to African Wildlife book. Handy reference with good color photos and species descriptions. Small enough to take along on safari. Good first book to start with.
Look at www.outdoorvisions.com They have many different books and have all of the books that have been listed above as well. The best place to look for books and video's!!!

One more vote for the Audubon book. It'll even fit in a knapsack that you can leave in the rig. That way you can page through it while your memory is still fresh.

You might pick up a copy of the Safari Club International record book (Africa). It will describe size, habits and range of African animals. SCI has a website and can give you further info.
