I was wanting to purchase a copy of the original text of Patterson's account of the Tsavo lions. Is this it or an edited version remake?

That book was re-written by Peter Capstick. Good book but a different style than the original written by Col. Patterson himself. Do a search for the original. I think they still print copies of it. good luck.

I do not believe it has been edited at all. I have it and it isnt in capsticks style. Just as African Game trails via capstick is the original text. I believe capsticks purpose was to reprint unavailable titles and not to edit them. he would have been wrong to think he could have edited Roosevelt and I do not believe he did nor did he edit patterson.

Sniper,

This is NOT the original, altrhough quite a bit of what is written in it is, and quite a lot have been added by Capstick.

It is a very interesting book though.

I have both books, and have enjoyed reading them both.

I dont see how capstick wrote any of it using the pronoun 'I'. Which parts of this book are not pattersons? Perhaps a condensation happened but where are the additions? _Baxter

I have this book that Sniper refers to in his original post: The Man-Eaters of Tsavo (Peter Capstick Library Series). Capstick just wrote the preface/introduction to the book. This book is a reprint of the orginal text.

It's in Death in the Silent Places where Capstick writes, in his own words, about Patterson. It's chapter one in the book. Other chapters cover Stigand, Pretorius, Siemel, Bell, and Corbett.

There are several books in the Peter Capstick Library Series. Each is a reprint of the originals.

Here's some of other books in the Peter Capstick Library Series:

Hunting the Elephant in Africa by Capt. C. H. Stigand
African Hunter by Baron Bror von Blixen-Finecke
African Game Trails by Theodore Roosevelt

I have the entire set of books in the Peter Capstick Library Series.

I, too, own that very book.

As Bob has so amply stated, it is straight Patterson--the good, the bad and the ugly.

Bob Faucett is right. It is a reprint of the original and NOT a rewrite of Patterson, Roosevelt or anyone else for that matter in Capstick's classic library. I have that one and Rossevelt's in my library. Capstick merely pulled some classics and had them reprinted as part of his classic library series. What you read are the words of Patterson 100% or Roosevelt, with the exception of a forward, etc. by Capstick.

Like several hunting books, this one is out of copywrite and an electronic copy can be downloaded from http://www.gutenberg.org/ for free. There are several african hunting books and 20 or so African exploration books available (including Stanley and Livingston).

Not as easy to read as paper but very nice to take on your computer or Palm Pilot when travelling.
