I don't know how many are left in the wild, but I have seen some in Zim. over the summer. Richard Pascall of Kudu Safaris has about 30 of them on his property as part of a conservation effort. His ranch is located in the Turk Mine area. I was luckly enough to see 3 durring my stay with them. One was a little to close and my tracker and I found out who was the fastest tree climer. If your ever in Zim it would be worth your time to spend a few days there in hopes of seeing one. If you need more informationon Kudu Safaris let me know.

Do you mean in the wild? Very few. In Kenya alone one estimated the number of black rhinos to be about 4000 in 1958. To-day? Maybe 50, mostly in Masai Mara.
In Tanzania you will find them in Ngorogoro carter, very, very few outside. I have a friend who was very badly mouled by one 10 years ago, bad luck for him.
In Zim there are still some, maybe 50, closely watched by armed game scouts.
In RSA nil, in Zambia very few and still there are some in northern Namibia. Bjorn
The camp we hunted at in Namibia had both Black and White Rhinos but only a few of the Black. All were very well protected and were not for hunting. They had game scouts that patrolled the property just for that purpose. It's funny that we never saw any White Rhinos, only Black. And there were a lot more White on the property.
Of course this doesn't answer you question, it is just an observation and my only experience with Rhinos.

Bjorn, there are still some black rhinos in South Africa. I saw several in Pilanesberg National Park last September.
We must have seen close to 100 white rhinos altogether on 5 different concessions in South Africa during a 15 day plains game hunt. White rhinos are definitely not rare or endangered in RSA.

Interesting observation on the black and whites. Last June I hunted with Peter Clausen on his Okosongoro Ranch in Namibia. Peter had 3 whites which were his, and was caring for 10 black for the Namibian Gov't. that came from Etosha. Although there were 3 times more blacks than whites, we saw a white on 3 different occassions and a black only once. Just the opposite of your experience. Go figure!
Back in 1994 there were about 15 Black rhino on Bubiana Game Conservancy in Southern Zimb (West Nicholson). Also 15 white rhino (numbers from memory).
Almost walked into a black rhino in the dark after following up wildebeest (less than 15 yards). Luckily the PH heard him feeding in the dark before he noticed us.
He had walked past the 4x4 on the way to where we were earlier and was also spotted by a tracker and my wife at the vehicle.
