I also thought Redford was totally wrong for the part of Finch-Hatton. They should have used a dashing Brit like Charles Dance (White Mischief, Pasquali's Island, etc.)

J.W. Hats in Salt Lake City will also build whatever you want. They are, as far as I know, one of the only manufacturers of equipment used by hatters in the US. They have no web site but a web search will provide the phone number I imagine. The owner is a really nice guy although I cant tell you anything about his politics. Roll Eyes

It's interesting to look at all the hats showing up here the last few days, but like it was stated earlier, an old ball cap, soft and well worn of a neutral color is about the best all around hunting hat you can wear. It won't always be getting caught on something and making a lot of noise and you can always wad it up and stick it in your pocket. And when the hunt is over, you can give it to your tracker. Save the funny hats to wear at home.

Here's what you really want:

"Charles Lancaster .450 NE (3 1/4) Back action non-ejector (formerly ejector) double barrelled big game rifle.

Double Barrelled .450 NE Big Game Rifle which was the personal weapon of Hon. Denys Finch-HGatton, Big game hunter and lover of Karen Blixen (Out of Africa).

Completed in 1911 and re-barrelled in 1928. Silver escutcheon with D.F.H initials and the date 1925.

In its original leather red beige lined case with initials D.F.H. This rifle is extremely accurate and a target is available.

Denys Finch-Hatton was born in England on April 24th 1887, the son of Henry Stormont Finch-Hatton, Earl of Winchelsea and Anne Finch-Hatton (nee Coddrington), a daughter of a former Admiral of the British Fleet. Educated at Eton and Balliol College, Oxford, Denys was a natural sportsman and scholar of the arts. In 1911 the 24 year old Denys bought land in British East Africa as an investment which would give him the freedom to spend his time hunting. He would spend every Autumn and Winter in Africa doing just that.

In 1925 he became a professional big game hunter and took numerous wealthy and distinguished clients on safari - including H.R.H. the Duke of Windsor (the then Prince of Wales). His taste for adventure led him to learn to fly, and it was on May 14th 1931 that he died in a fatal plane crash in his Gypsy Moth near what is now the Tsave National Park, Kenya. He is buried in the Ngong Hills and an obelisk marks his grave to this day.

The story of Denys Finch-Hatton and his love affair with Karen Blixen (his only known romance) is immortalised by Robert Redford and Meryl Streep in the Academy Award winning film "Out of Africa" (1985)."

But if you can't afford to go out to dinner once in a while, you'd best forget about it.

Click on my signature and you'll see a Stetson Gunclub hat (from Noggintops) as worn in Africa. In the thick stuff, from Africa to British Columbia, that hat (and its predecessor)has saved both face and ears a lot of abuse. When the thorns and brambles get too bad, just lower your head and push on through.

Initially I wore it for sun protection mostly. Turned out to be reasonably good chaps for my noggin as well !! Baseball caps are great, and I take one along. Mostly for bird shooting and fishing diversions. But for hot days and thick bush, I'll take a large brim hat anytime.

Just my opinion.

Gentlemen,
Baseball caps are for baseball. A baseball cap is as fitting at a hunt as a pith helmet is at baseball. I am glad to say that as I don't play baseball, I have never had a baseball cap on my head. Should I ever take up the game, I will of course dress appropriately.

Regards,
Martin Cool

Baseball cap may be a bit of misnomer, here in Texas we call them "gimme caps" and most people have about two dozen or more laying around at any one time, and you don't buy them, they are given away. Some of the best PH's I have had wore them, and I figured they must know something about what works.

I personally use on of the Tilleys. They are rugged, can be wadded up and stuck in a pocket or pack, sides can be buttoned up to avoid getting hung up on the sides or left down to keep out sun later in the day, Turns water(at least for a while) has a under the chin strap if the wind in the land cruiser gets bad. Best of all it was a gift from my daughter so the price was right and think of her while it is in use. Use what you like.

Although cartridge selection is important there is nothing that will substitute for proper first shot placement. Good hunting, "D"

DC300, I have no idea where you live, but in most parts of the USA there stores where they sell quality western type hats! These had shops shape these hats to your order. Simply print the pictures BobF furnished, and take or send them to the store for a custom shapeing! A Resistal will run you around $100 to $150, but will out last you! Here in Cow Town (Fort Worth,TX) custom hat shops are on every corner, but I realize some cities have only "CAT HATS" available! Roll Eyes

I have a Stetson 5x Beaver, that is 50 yrs old, and is still in perfect shape. This was my father's hunting hat, and has a Zebra hide hat band about 1" wide, with a 2 3/4" brim, and is plenty wide to protect from the sun! A 2 3/4" brim is 12 1/4" wide from side to side, on a 7 1/8 size hat!

Mike

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.
