I've figured out how to play with my DVD software and was studying my elephant hunt in slow mo. It's amazing the details you pick up as you go frame by frame over footage that was mere seconds long.

Here's a photo essay of my cow hunt.

Buzz and the gang and myself have been stalking this cow for awhile in the jess. We've kept the wind in our faces and shifted back and forth looking over the herd as they are feeding. There were two tuskless here but one had a calf, we didn't want her.

We get our girl singled out and opt for various positions. Finally Buzz picks a place and he looks at me and says this is going to be a frontal brain shot. The cow has stepped sideways across a trail with her head in the jess.

We get in close and set up.

She is backing out of the jess here, she heard us set up.

She's in the lane and looking at me and Buzz who is crouched down, Shaun is right behind me running the video. At this point she has not decided what we are.

NOW SHE SEES ME!

She's just decided to come but I fired at the same time. If you buy the video you will see at this point she hitches her head up and starts to step forward.

The shot...POW!

Head's up!

Going.....

Going.....

Down!

We are so focused while performing the hunt to be able and go back and see the "big" picture is fantastic. Things I could see watching the video:

As I watched I could see that the whole time the elephant was moving, from when she backed out of the jess and was looking at me that my barrel followed her every move. All the way to the shot. I was on target, had my spot picked and stayed on it.

I cleared the spent round and closed the bolt only as she hit the ground. Was I too slow?

She was 13 yards away.

In one photo, though these are pretty low resolution, shows the angle and position of her head, both eyes, the zygomatic arches are visable framing the eyes. You can see her focus.

It sure is nice to watch this to be able to evaluate the hunt. I'll be buying the whole thing from Buzz so I can see how everyone else did it.

I personally can't wait to do it again.

Ann it would seem to me that you should be given a copy and not have to buy it. JMO

I mean seriously if I made a hunting video and was selling them for 40 dollars each the least I could do would be to give at least one video each to all of the people who were in it. I wouldnt even have to be asked. JMO

Ann,

That was way cool! I got that funny feeling I get just before my own shots just looking at your stills. Awesome! Also I ackowledge you for immediately reloading. It drives me crazy to see these folks on video stand there with a spent shell still in the chamber. I find myself yelling at the TV "Reload you jackass".

Well done!

No Ann, Will's was better. He got two head shots by only firing once. The first one went to the elephant's head, the other to Wills animal

Just kidding Will, you both did great!

Ann,

Please explain to us novice frontal brainers your shot placement thoughts.

IE. How do YOU locate the brain on a frontal shot?

Thanks

Now that you can relive it from the safe side of the video, I suppose the nerves still catch fire actually having lived it!! Smiler

Definate kudos on the reload.

Shot placement was obviously very effective, but why take an unnecessary chance. I'd rather have an unnecessary round chambered and not need it versus not have one and do. Did good! Probably just how you planned and practiced.

Buzz asked me to post this comment regarding anyone who participated in his ele DVD. Basically, if you are on it, a free DVD is coming your way if you request it. After spending hours & hours working on this DVD and watching you hunt your ele's, I feel like I know you personally! Please email your address to - d1design@earthlink.net and I will make sure you get your DVD. No pretenders, please. Remember I've seen all you on tape Smiler

David Leonhardt
d1design@earthlink.net

Here are Buzz's Comments -

I see one very valid comment to Ann saying she should get a free DVD. That
goes with out saying that every one who participated in the DVD gets one for
free. I obviously have not had the time to send them with the hectic shows
but to please drop Dave a line and he will send them on to you.

Just for Reference to a post about the brain position (Bill S)I had the help
of Richard Harland, Sten Cedegren and Ian Nyaschens all of whom have shot a
couple of thousand elephants each. They all all gave it the thumbs up!

I hope you all enjoy the video and come away from it with deeper
understanding on the hunting and different shot placements on elephants for
that was my sole intention when I produced the Dvd with Dave.

I have an agreement with Safari Press who will be distributing it as soon as
we get all the signatures in the right place which will take a bit of time
but it can be purchased directly through David up until I have my web
connection running and when Safari Press get it on their shelves.

Lastly I want to say thanks to all the AR members with whom I have hunted
with over the last couple of season. They have all been with out exception
fun hunts! Cheers Buzz

EleView....if I read Buzz's note correctly, you are able to distribute DVD's for the interim (until Safari Press takes over)? Do you have a price (including shipping to Canada!) and contact info?

Yes that is correct. We will only sell direct until Safari Press is online with the DVD. We will also sell it through www.cmsafaris.com, but we are still working on that as well.

For our Canadian friends - If possible, send an international money order in U.S. dollars for the same amount ($39.95 + $5 shipping). The shipping will be the same. Shipping to Europe is $10. Sorry for the inconvenience. We will get the credit card ordering up as soon as possible.

Thanks!
