I am not sure this is the correct forum; however what ever happened to Ross Seyfried. I think he used to write for quite a few US hunting publications and was a PH for a while.
I have not heard or seen anything from him in many years.

IIRC:
He had an address somewhere in one of the Northern free states. Semi-retired, but some sort of hunting spot.

I will forever be in his debt for giving a young gun crank an hour of his time to explain his hunting experience, going after cape buffalo, with a 45 Heavy Colt Seville, on the phone,

Also, I think he was the vehicle that either motivated, or propelled John Linebaugh to his position.

He's a good writer, one of my favorites. He is the guy whom Linebaugh called and talked into meeting him to check out one of Linebaugh's early conversions. I remember Linebaugh writing something about making Seyfried refusing to shoot the thing first because he was afraid it might blow up.

Found the article.

I enjoyed his writings as well. He was a big fan of the 340 Weatherby. I bought one after reading his stories in about 1980 (Fresh out of college). I "weatherized"it with a FG stock and teflon and hunted all over North America with it. I think he helped me instill great confidence in that rifle. It payed off; Never shot anything with it that ever took a step. Bang / Flop.
He was good writer; IMHO

Ross is a brilliant gun guy and a pretty nice guy to boot, but he's not writing a whole lot these days. I spoke to him briefly in Reno and he seemed to be doing well.

A great guy and a terrific writer....

BUT, lets not forget his big sin, his personal DG rifle was/is a Remington 416 "Push Feed" beer

Seyfried is one of the great American writers on hunting and shooting.
Best of all, unlike some others, he didn't use flabby language.

I had the pleasure of spending an evening and the next day's breakfast with him (and John Barness) at the Afton House some years ago.

Both were nice guys, but I initially pissed of Seyfried (before he knew I knew who he was) by trashing lever action/big bore rifles... He caught on, and became a delightful guy with whom to have supper and an egg or two with in the following a.m.

I remember well the double take he had (after I trashed "old" calibers) when I went to my room and returned with my buffalo rifle for that safari.. an original 1895 Winchester in .405 Winchester. With good humor, he bought me a Scotch (actually, I think John did) after we quit laughing.

I think I remember? he had been hunting in Botswana on that safari with a Winchester 1871. His hard cast bullets had great penetration, but he had to shoot his buff a bunch.... but I've done the same with a .375 H&H.

BTW, I love the Afton House. There is no telling whom you will meet there... especially since the Afton folks are cooking steaks most evenings on the laupa/patio.

JudgeG ... just counting time 'til I am again finding balm in Gilead chilled out somewhere in the Selous.

How could one make contact with Ross for booking an elk hunt?

I think that Ross was responsible for my interest in high quality guns. No, he does not write anymore for rifle/handloader magazine. Unfortunately.

Push feed 416 Rem: yes he had one but extensively reworked by the late Chet Brown. He used it in the 90's for a nice article in which he described a test for the then new top bullets, being v ery happy with 350 Barnes X.

In the beginning and as a PH in Samibia he used original (and beautiful) Rigby 416 and Rigby pre-war Sidelock 577 NE.

He's done some experimenting and writing about choke-rifled guns, notably the Westley Richards Fauneta in 20 gauge that makes quite a rifle with the right, heavy projectile.

OOPs Oregon is correct. Ross is an amazing writer and student of firearms. His knowledge of the old stuff is truly encyclopedic.

He has also written a wonderful article in the Dec1999/Jan2000 edition of Handloader called, "Reloading the Nitro Express".

Still the foundation by which many of us reload our "Cordite proofed" doubles.

Never had drinks with Teddy Roosevelt, J.A. Hunter and you. I have the first two on speed dial, but just don't have your number for some reason. Cool

If you wish to meet some interesting folks, go to the Sea Cliff and the Afton House often. I've probably averaged two stays in each for lots of years.

Heck, I even flew to Africa with Tony Black, once. clap The SAA waiting room in Atlanta used to be a great place to meet folks as was the KLM frequent flyer? lounge in Amsterdam.

I'm kinda surpeised by this thread and some of the comments, given this board. Ross is maybe the most active writer going right now concerning old nitro and particularly old black powder express cartridges and rifles. He has one or two articles every month in Double Gun Journal on the subject, and is likely the go to expert right now. I particularly like that he actually hunts with the old rifles he reviews.
