WHat type of cartridge carrier do you use - a separate belt type, a thru your own belt type, bullets in your pocket, or what?

I prefer Africase.

The problem with the open top carriers is that the ammo gets rained on, the ammo gets dirty, the ammo gets baked in the sun, and the ammo scratches my gun.

I've tried most of them. Prefer the canvas belt from Westley Richards, to which you can attach your GPS. Besides you can easily take it off in the Cruiser.

I use a separate canvas belt that holds Murray Custom Leather C-2 shell holders. I have both the all leather (for my .416) and the leather/elastic (for my .375) so there is no mistake in the field. Each is on its own belt.

I find it easier to have a separate belt with the ammo holders on it. By not having the belt run through your pant's belt loops, you can position the ammo holders (shift them around so they don't hit your rifle stock when walking etc.). Also as Bill said, you can remove them when riding or having lunch.

Regards,

Terry

I usually have three sources of spare ammo if I can arrange it: first, a spare magazine in the buttstock or a buttstock ammo carrier (usually 4-5 rounds); second, a belt carrier (usually 5-10 rounds); and third, more rounds in the factory plastic ammo box inserts in a pocket somewhere (another 10 rounds). My initial loading comes from the pocket carrier, leaving five or six rounds in the pocket. I don't like to head out without at least 20 rounds on my body somewhere. I usually top off singly from the buttstock carrier first (from the shoulder) or belt carrier (from field ready), then top them off from the pocket. I've used the Galco belt carriers and they've provided good service.

I carry basically the same rig Terry does for my 416. For my 375/or 300 (pictured), I carry a Westley-Richards leather shell holder courtesy of my friend Allen Day. jorge

Cabela's has several different kinds depending on the caliber. Take a look at their catalog. I just purchased several types (all different) for my 300WM, 375 H&H and 416 Rigby. Prices seem reasonable. Depends if you want functionality or looks/tradition.

Buttstock carrier for 4 to 6 rounds, whatever the rifle max load is, then 10 to 20 rounds on two belt slides, then 3 to 5 in elastic loops sewn to shirt or jacket on the weak side below breast pocket.

I like the nylon and elastic carriers, ala Uncle Mike's. Leather sucks for carrying ammo in, but I have some of the fancy leather stuff, reserved for Sunday go to meeting dress attire, worn seldom and briefly.

I also use Murray shell holders. If you don't see something that fits your needs, which is unlikely, Dick Murray will make it for you.

Dogcat,

I know people say they throw off the balance of the gun etc. but I've been using those Uncle Mike's type buttstock cartridge carries for years and they just work. There's no cartridge belt to worry about, the cartridges are always handy, no fumbling with stuck shells in too tight leather loops, cartridge box covers getting in the way and finally they don't pull your pants down. This is a simple rig and I like simple. These buttstock carriers certainly are not for the traditionalist but for me they function extremely well.

Regards,

Mark

I like the stock carriers but they seem to always have two problems.

The always seem to need a little alteration to fit the stock profile, and they seem to want to move around some, especially with time.

Now I turn them inside out and liberally coat the inside with rubber cement and allow to dry at least overnight. Once you carefully turn them back rightside out and wrestle them on the gun, they won't slip about, but can be removed without hurting the finish.

With the stock holders, you can also be sure you have the right ammo for the right gun.

I find that with the elastic Uncle Mike type shell holder you can pretty well prevent it from going anywhere if you just burn a hole in the bottom near the rear and slip that over your sling swivel. That seems to keep mine from wandering. I still use the leather flap covered cartridge case on my belt and one way or another I seem to wind up with a round or two in a pocket someplace. Add that to a magazine full and I should be in good shape.

I use a San Pedro Saddlery, "prairie belt." It's a wide, heavy duty canvas, just like the old cavalry canvas prairie belts. It "can" hold 40 rounds, but the most I have ever put into it was 20 rounds. No corrosion of the brass. Since they make their products mainly for Wester type shooting, I measured my .375, .416, and .485 case diameters and compared it to the .45-70, .50-70, etc. The belt has done yeoman service all over the world and still looks like new. By the way they have a 10% off sale right now. Take a look and good luck. Look under rifle belts.

No, but you need the cartridge heads sticking out so you can grab them.

A question for the hunters of long experience: do you have any sense whether the gleam of exposed brass in some carriers, as opposed to those with full-length pockets and flap covers, results in more spooked game or not?

Bull (they can't pronounce Bill in Africa),

Cute belt. One more thing, depending how much sweating is going on. If you get a leather belt soaked with sweat, they take longer to dry out than a cotton web belt.

Any more safari secrets are going to cost you guys money! Wink

I like to put six or so rounds in my right shirt pocket in a belt slide or similar and leave them there for the whole hunting trip - if I use one I replace it immediately from my pack. When I change shirts I change the cartridges over, just like my smokes and lighter.

This stems from the acute embarrassment of being charged by a wounded wart hog and having an empty 300 Weatherby ad my PH missing three times with his 458. The shooting sticks held the little bugger off until he expired from blood loss.

And the PH missing three times? Well, you try hitting something that is running around you, your client, two trackers a gunbearer, a trainee PH and the Memsab in a 15 feet radius circle. It was a quiet night around the campfire as we were all deafened by the gun fire.

Ausie Mike I understand about needing more ammo. I got into a chase after a wounded Kudu once. I hit a limb on the initial shot and a merry chase though the kopjes ensued. It took us far and wide. I had inadvertently left my extra ammo in the toyota. Lead poisoning did eventually work on him. All ended well but I will never be in the bush without extra again.

Although cartridge selection is important there is nothing that will substitute for proper first shot placement. Good hunting, "D"

I use Uncle Mike's. Simple, inexpensive, & they work. The material won't discolor our brass.

You can pack one for each type of ammo. this set up was for my double. Softs on one side, solids on the other. Just my opine.
