My last trip to South Africa, on way to Zim, was in 04 and now am signed up for buff and ele this summer. I am taking the same rifles and binos, as it turns out. My question, Is my Form 4457 for the two rifles still valid, when it is dated 2004?? Did a search on this and T. Carr explains this as only a requirement for the SAP for proof of ownership. Last time I had the 4457 and rifle invoices, both that are copied. But the important thing is the validity of the Form 4457 to get by US Customs on my way back. Anyone have clarification on this. they never expire ****************************************************************** R. Lee Ermey: "The deadliest weapon in the world is a Marine and his rifle." ****************************************************************** We're going to be "gifted" with a health care plan we are forced to purchase and fined if we don't, Which purportedly covers at least ten million more people, without adding a single new doctor, but provides for 16,000 new IRS agents, written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn't understand it, passed by a Congress that didn't read it but exempted themselves from it, and signed by a President, with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn't pay his taxes, for which we'll be taxed for four years before any benefits take effect, by a government which has already bankrupted Social Security and Medicare, all to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, and financed by a country that's broke!!!!! Per the customs agent in Omaha: The form used to be important to show that it was yours when you left so you don't have to pay duty on it returning.....but (believe it or not) Slick Bill Clinton signed into law a bill that required customs to prove you bought the item overseas in order to charge you duty on it. You used to have to prove it owned it previously, and this was the original reason for the form. This form might also cover expensive cameras etc..... However it has become a required document as proof of ownership by some foreign countries and we still have to have it.....but for a totally different reason than what it originally was intended. You don't need it to get by customs upon returning to the US..... Thanks slick willy!!!!!! /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." I had to show it to customs on the way back from Tanzania in '03. It just depends on who you get and what kind of day they are having. Take it and you will be fine, as said above, it is good forever. Although cartridge selection is important there is nothing that will substitute for proper first shot placement. Good hunting, "D"

The form 4457 is used for all valuables. Guns, scopes, binoculars, cameras, etc. I have several with more than one firearm and scopes, etc and it has never been a problem including last year.

...as long as the firearms, and S/N don't change, you can use the same Form 4457 indefinately. Just as an aside: Eighteen (18) trips to Africa, and each, and EVERY time, Customs wanted to see my Form 4457. Keep it handy! Good luck
