Never heard of this before.

But, sounds very similar to outfits which have not paid the required trophy fees.

The export tax as mentioned has nothing to do with outstanding trophy fees.

I have just ended a long conversation with an outfitter on this issue who tells me the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) have decided to impose this existing tax on all skins destined for export.

There is indeed an export tax but it has always been levied solely on hides and skins as in salted or sun-dried hides to be used for the manufacture of leather products.

It is obvious that some narrow-minded official at the airport has decided there is no distinction between sport hunted skins and commercial hides and that technically, the export tax is not applicable to one and not the other.

The issue has been partially resolved but not yet finalized.

Fujo is correct. A few recent shipments have made it through the gauntlet wihtout incurring this export tax. I am told by our exporter that a circular exempting Sport hunted trophies from being taxed has been sent out by the respective department. We are trying to obtain a copy to verify if it is indeed the case. The only way to be sure is to actually proceed with export and see what the offical on duty at the time decides coffee

TIA
