When you go to the Ocean Basket definately try the king klip. Tastes a lot like fresh cod.

Gold Reef City (reconstructed mining town from the early 1900's) is also a good way to spend a few hours. there's a GREAT little gun shop there, specialising in oldies (GRC Arms)

You could also ask your hosts to arrange a Soweto tour or a trip to Cambanos in Midrand (Curio and diamond wholesalers). Your wife would LOVE that!

Whatever you do, please remember that Jo'burg IS the heartland of gangsterism and thuggery in Gauteng Province (Gangster's Paradise). Be aware, and be safe.

Gentlemen,

I have to be honest...telling someone to go to the Ocean Basket is like telling a visitor to the USA to be sure to eat at Chilis or Olive Garden or something....If one is going to visit Joburg, there are many good non-chain type restaurants to choose from..and I'd highly recommend that.

A great place to look is www.eatout.co.za

Anyways, for seafood, Cape Town Fish Market (which now has branches in GP) is definitely better than Ocean Basket.

Just my opinion...

I agree wholeheartedly with JR Slate. If you really want to eat out in style and eat 'local', try the following:

Carnivores (Muldersdrift) - Eat-all-you-can carvery. Mostly venison. Starve yourself for a week beforehand, and don't forget to try the Eland!

The Train (Midrand) - Ditto above. 140 dishes. Pricey, if you earn in rands

Leipoldts (Braamfontein) - Haven't been there in YEARS, so check this one out. But very classy place, serving traditional SA fare (Waterblommetjie bredie, bobotie, etc., etc.)

Personal recommendation? Carnivores. It's a long drive from Jhb Int'l, but WELL worth it!

Rikkie has some good advice...I've been to a few of those places and all are worthwhile.

If in Cape Town, head to Stellenbosch and go to Volkskombuis...it's wonderful, and it also happens to be the place where I proposed to my girlfriend..!!
