I'm departing for Zim (via RSA) at the end of this month on Delta from IAH. Has anyone encountered of late any unusual problems or unexpected situations declaring and checking firearms/ammo with Delta agents at IAH?

Only used Delta once out of Houston (last year) and experienced no issues with firearms or ammo.

Have flown Delta a dozen times from Alaska to Jo'burg. Firearms transferred in Atlanta and made it to SA with never a problem or delay.
For this year's hunt I am thinking of trying Emirates as I've heard lots of good things and it is much less money.

Did they check your ammo weight? If so, hopefully they didn't include the weight of your lock box in the 11# total.

Yes, I've since heard Emirates is a good option, which I'll definitely check next time.

No, just asked me how much the ammo weighed.

I used to use Delta as my "go to" Africa flight. Short leg to Atlanta and then the long push to Jo'burg. Never had any issues other than when I first started it I had to be at the airport at 4:30 am because the flight to Jo'burg left at 10:00 am! Much easier connection now.

My last trip to South Africa was on Emirates Business Class which is significantly cheaper than Delta. However it is six hours longer. I was traveling with the wife and friends so better to do it in comfort rather than with speed!

Regarding Delta departures from IAH, I flew Delta (IAH w/ firearms) in 2012 (Zim), 2013 (Zim), 2014 (Newfoundland), 2015 (Zim & Newfoundland), and 2016 (Alaska). Never had any problems with Delta or TSA. All flights were on time and without issues. Hope this helps.
