Since i have a Ruger nr 1 that launches 480 grs bullets at 2350 fps, i wonder how a 550 grs woodleigh would be forthis rifle , would that be a good thumper or should i go for the 500 grs swift a-frame?

im guessing 458 lott if thats the case id opt for the 500 grain bullet the 550 will also work if your rifle can shoot it well.

You could rechamber to 460 weatherby and load the 550 grain Woodleighs backwards to have a large, flat meplat. And you should be able to reach 2350 fps.

no, iam happy withe the nitro round, and it gives me good value for the money. iam thinking about using rhino in it (500 grs) because the tbbc is so expensive here in norway. ca 80 us for 25 bullets. and swift are about the same for 500 bullets. i have sevearl boxes with 480 grs woodleigh, and work like a charm.

Yeah, but you still need to load the bullets backwards.

500 grs, what do you mean by loading the bullets backward?

If you are indeed getting 2350 out of 480 gr bullets in your 450 Nitro you can get around 2050 fps safely with the 550 gr. If that velocity suits you and it will group well, go for it. 465H&H

Bullets with a wide, flat meplat penetrate deeper than round nose bullets. If you are not already purchasing flat nose bullets, such as the FN solids from www.gscustomco.za or www.northforkbullets.com, then you could load regular bullets backwards as the base is flat.

i saw on http://www.billsaccuracy.com/nitro.htm that he has made one almost like mine in 450 nitro and 500 grs bullets, he gets 2500 fpr, 460 wby, but how the pressure is, idon`t know.

I don't know how the Woodleigh solid would work if loaded backward. The back of the Woodleigh bullet is open to the lead core and might deform when hitting game and act more like a soft point. While it could work with a solid based bullet the Woodleigh isn't. The Woodleigh soft points have a solid base but are not steel jacketed so I would expect them to deform if loaded backwards. Perhaps someone has tried this with the woodleighs solids? 465H&H

i thought of the 550 grs woodleigh soft nose for a BG /moose/ wildboar thumper. but thats the beauty about a 450 , bullets from 300 grs up to 600 grs if iam not mistaking, from cheap hollowpoint upto very fine big game bullets.

rigby, if Bill posted that,, then I would say it is true for the rifle he built.. I had him fix mine so it would handle the 550 and 715 grain cast slugs.. I don't push mine as fast as you as mine is built on the 45-70 No-1 Stay Alert,Stay Alive Niet geschoten is altijd mis Hate of America is the defeat position of failed individuals and the failing state
