Typhoid or not?

In our bid to obtain antimalarial drugs we were told by our HMO provider that we should take a anti typhoid regime. Has anybody done this and is it recommended for the Zambezi valley in Zimbabwe? It is a series of eight pills and lasts for five years.

I took the typhoid vaccine when going to Tanzania in 2006. Not a problem.

I did it with no ill-effects. Heck, it's cheap insurance.

Having caught Typhoid once - take the pills!

We were catching live croc for stomach analysis on lake kariba and two of us went down with typhoid. Turns out crocs are known carriers. I survived but was very ill for 4 months. The game scout died (Combination of typhoid and malaria was just too much)

I used the live (pills) version with no problem. Lasts for 5 years so you should be good for several more hunts.

So, how many people that actually live in those places actually take typhoid vaccinations for their whole lives? I would bet about zero. Having lived about 8 years in a typhoid endemic area, I would say forget the vaccine and be careful of what you eat and of who provides what you eat.

My mother got typhoid after her one and only infraction of the rules of common sense; eating a piece of coconut from a street vendor. If you are the adventurous type and like to eat raw food from street people, just remember there are a lot of other diseases to consider like polio, various intestinal parasites and hepatitis.

I took the Typhoid vaccine,,, shot.. for Namibia 2 years ago with no side effects other than the typical stiffness in the arm for the evening. Who wants 105 degree fever with a severe headaches chills and the "squirts" for weeks or longer? I did hear of a hunter who contracted typhoid and it worked his game scouts overtime and they covered a lot of ground. Two were digging,,, two were covering and one was scounting for fresh ground......Take the shot....

Just finished my second run of the capsule treatment for my July 26 departure to Namibia. First one was in 2000. No adverse reactions. As stated above, cheap insurance.

The vaccine is cheap insurance for sure. But no vaccine is 100%. ErikD and his wife got Typhoid while in Mozambique even though they had the vaccination. But then they were living in a tent thruout most of Africa for a year, with constant contact with local food and markets. Still, better to be vaccinated than not.

I had flu like symptoms the next day. Headache, lethargy, and I got super hungry (my usual reaction to the flu). I had typhoid, hepA, hepB, and tetanus all at the same time. At the followup hepA and hepB shots the woman said it was probably the typhoid shot.

I would suggest taking the pills several weeks before you go, if you are using Malarone as your anti-malarial. If I recall correctly, you aren't supposed to take Malarone until at least a week after you finish the typhoid pills - otherwise, the typhoid vaccine will not be as effective.

We are taking Malarone so we better get started. Thanks everybody for the information. We will be leaving the 18th of August. If the vaccine is good for five years all the more reason go go as often as possible before then. Now if I can get Bob to settle down it will be a good trip.

Usta work third world a lot. Always kept up an my vaccinations. Used to take the typhoid injections and got slightly ill afterwards, but the oral vaccine caused no problems in '06. Much better safe than sorry, and typhoid is endemic in most parts of Africa.

I took the typhoid vaccine back in 2004 along with a polio booster, hep A and B series and a booster tetnus vaccine. I had no problems from any of them.

Got my last Hepatitis booster Tuesday,,, 8 days before departure,,,no reactions except I went home that evening and repacked my bag for the 15th time! drwes

I wouldn't recommend to anyone not to take it, but be aware that 4 out 10 who take the vaccine still contract the disease. But don't believe me:

I had gotten typhoid once, here in the states. I was one of thirteen that got it that year. I got it from a mexican restaurant. The owners went overseas and brought it back. Thats what the Mi. Food and Health thought. They later said it came from the lettuce! Boy, Was I ever sick. It came out the backend like razorblades. It was the sickest I have ever been.It took a week before the doctors found out what I had. I had to go to the hospital every day for 2-3 weeks. The only good thing that came from it was I lost lots of weight.

I took the pills as well. No ill effects, and my teeth have never been whiter.
