Gemsbok hunt for sale

A good friend of mine has a fully transferable “authorization certificate†to hunt oryx (gemsbok) on White Sands Missile Range in Southern New Mexico. Guys this is as close to an African hunt as you can get without going to Africa and it’s reasonable. I’ve been on 5 of these hunts and I can attest that; a) you will have a blast b) you will feel like you are in Africa and c) you will get one. You will likely also see some monster antelope and mule deer and if you are lucky you’ll see some wild horses. He is selling it because his son also drew a tag and they don’t need two oryx this year.

If you are interested check it out on ebay at http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=014&item=330033193009

Do not hesitate to send me a PM if you have any questions about hunting oryx in New Mexico.

THe guy is nuts. You get one permit per lifetime. He needs to hunt as well as his son. I did this hunt several years ago and it is great.

Hmmmmm. . .

The "Buy It Now" price is $4,000. If you were willing to spend $4,000 for an oryx hunt right now, you could buy RT airfare to Namibia for $1500 or so, book with a game ranch for $200 per day, and pay a trophy fee of $500 for the gemsbok you shoot. Along with shipping your trophy back it all adds up to less than the NM hunt, which, with transportation, lodging, and other costs would probably run you a total of $5,000 or so, depending on where you had to come from.

Dogcat, you are not exactly correct in your statement about one hunt per lifetime. You get one per lifetime of the regular draw type hunts. I got mine in 02. You can also apply for either private land (alternating years based on birth year) or WSMR depradation hunts. There is no limit on these, just luck of the draw. I did a WSMR depradation hunt in 04. See Link https://forums.accuratereloading.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/...=667106851#667106851 So right there I have had 2 hunts! The encentative permits are also a bonus. They are given out to those who are drawn from the individuals that return their game surveys. Another opportunity that has no limit, just luck involved. So, even though I have had my lifetime hunt, I still get 2 opportunities a year to draw another tag either via returning my survey or through the depradation draw.

I think the price is ridiculous for buy it now, but time will tell what the market will bear on this one.

Ouch! $1616 for the nonresident license though. That's sheep hunting money.

I agree with Thaine. Go to Africa and do it right.

Well… you MIGHT be able to do Africa for $5 grand… maybe. I doubt it. I know it cost me a BUNCH more than that.

However, not everybody wants to go to Africa. You can hunt this beautiful animal right here in the good ol’ US of A. (Contrary to popular opinion east of the Mississippi - a US citizen DOES NOT need a passport to travel to New Mexico.) Not to mention fewer logistical issues and a hunt for oryx in NM will take less vacation.

Not only that but you get to keep the meat and there is no better meat than oryx. Right Thane?

$1616 is steep but NM raised the prices a few years ago because the market would bear it…. Just like sheep.

I realize this is not the hunt for everyone but it is a great opportunity for someone. It took me nearly 20 years to draw an oryx tag… you may be luckier…

Who knows… it might go for a lot less than $4000, right?

I just saw an ad for a Gemsbok (Oryx) hunt in New Mexico for 5 days for $3800, plus tag of $1526. Apparently it includes food, accomodations, guide service, etc.

Interesting... It's probably off range if it's 5 days, right? They have small scattered herds off range and from the guys I've talked to... sometimes they are there and sometimes they are not.

The ad says that it's on 160,000 acres next to the White Sands Missile Range for any 5 days through March 31, 2006. Bunkhouse accomodations, hot showers, great meals and guide service. They also state that there is a "90%" kill on 30-39" trophies.

Cool. It seems like a guy ought to be able to find some oryx on 160,000 acres next to the range. I'm sure the numbers are accurate.

The guy I talked to had about 10,000 acres. His place was located west of the range and he told me it's hit or miss.

Crosshairs
Not that I've had for a North American game animal. Not only that, but there is an excellent processor (Rick Martin I believe) in La Luz (outside of Alamogordo) and Tammy Hawkins in Las Cruces can do a bang up job on your mount.

I hear ya infinito but you missed a couple of items and from your own web site… the trophy fee for oryx is $930 and the daily rate is $320

By my math it’s more like…

Daily rate for 5 days $1600
Trophy fee $930
Gratuity $250
Pack and Dip $250
US Customs broker $500
Trophy shipping $500
VAT $350
Flight $1500
Total $6030

I didn’t add Taxidermy because that a constant. But I’m SURE I missed a couple of other expenses.

And I have to agree… a warthog and impala and a couple of other critters are somewhat obligatory once you are over there (maybe THAT’s why it cost me so much more Confused).

But there’s nothing like being in Africa and looking up at night and seeing the Southern Cross while you sit around the campfire sipping a Zambezi beer. It gives me chills to think about it.

All of that to say… we’re talking about apples and oranges… and realistically you can’t do an African hunt for what this will cost ya.
