matetsi unit 1 of zimbabwe
I was trying to find out about the matetsi unit 1 hunting in zimbabwe. anyone know anything about it and are there good quality animals there

I hunted the area in the early 1990's. Unit 1 was always regarded as spectacular, in fact all the Matetsi units offered wonderful hunting, especially Sable. Lion were good, buffalo tend to move around and elephant migrated with the seasons between Zim and Botswana. Trophy quality was exceptional.

I'll be following this thread to see how the areas are performing now.

I worked there from 1984 into the mid 90's. It was quite simply the best single concession I have ever hunted.

As of late it has had nice people like Out of Africa and other illegal or quasi-legal activities going on. So not sure of it's current status. As far as I know the concession is still owned by a Zanu-PF thug, but I stand to be corrected.

Like Neil I would be interested io hear an update - I consider it my home.

Anyone have any current information about the Unit? Who has it and what's the game status?

Hutty - read Ron Olivers post above. Why would an American care what the game is like?

Sorry to hear this, but Ganyana is right, don't go near it.

Sorry- I must have posted right after Ron posted and did not see it. Thanks for the heads up.

I traveled through the area in '07. Spent one night in a hunting lodge. Nice lodge but never saw the first animal. Never heard any game even at night, nor saw anything in the field at first light. Glad I was only passing through.

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."

Sad, nothing positive to be said about Unit 1. Guess that's what happens when Zanu PF cronies get given something once considered special to the white man.
