HS! Marc, how is it that you always take just awesome trophies? I'd think they had them tied up waiting for you - except I heard the story behind the Masailand lion, and know how hard you worked for that LDE in CAR, and am sure this was much the same. Hi Bill: I don't know why exactly Africa has been so kind to me. When I walked up to him and saw the spiral horns flared I knew Jason and I were in "rare territory" if you will. The trackers were literally shaking. Hell it still hasn't sunk in! Because of the LDE 20 months ago, it was like Yogi says, deja vu all over again. I had seen him twice from a distance through the binos, but you know how those dreams go sometimes. You're like yeah, right "if we could only get close enough." Jason utilized the fog and vegetation totally to our advantage. We climbed up "Mt Everest" for hours and closed the shot to less than 130 yds. I can remember taking aim at him though the scope and telling myself, "don't blow it Watts." Asking myself repeatedly, did I jack a round in the chamber? Better not check now! It was kinda like a leopard shot-a chippy that sometimes seems more difficult because of all the shaking. Fortunately it worked out fine. Headed to my Sable Trail ranch for the holidays. Just finished my trophy lodge. Walls are already starting to close in on me. With cape buff shoulder mounts, and lions and leopards life-sized, space fills up quickly. Now I gotta go find room for a life-size Mt. Nyala! Thanks for the kind words from you and all the AR community. Ann, sorry to see the news of your flooding situation. My prayers are with you. Happy Thanksgiving to all. I'm thankful for our hunting freedoms and two good legs that allowed me to climb to heaven to get this monster nyala. Happy hunting, Moja (I'm gonna go sit in a deer blind and wait for a doe.)

Marc, Awesome, wow, fantastic...just don't do it in this case. I don't think I can actually think of appropriate wording at this point. Breathtaking, mind-boggling, remarkable, staggering... I never imagined any type of nyala could get this enormous. Congratulations to you and your entire crew. Dave

Nice bull... I've got to get to Ethiopia one of these days! Dang Rich: That one makes mine look like a midget! Nassos was telling me about that "freak" that he had shot but I had never seen the photo. Is that one 47"...49" or what?...You know what they say about records...'made to be broken'...but I don't ever see that one getting broken. Moja

Hi Marc, He shot it in the heather some miles above the Munessa Forest in Sept, 1984. As you can see in the picture it was taken with an iron sighted Mannlicher Shoenaur model 1960(?) in .30-06. The longest horn is 48 & 5/8" and the combined score is 117. It broke the Rowland Ward Record for length from one taken in 1936. The lifesize mount was at the 1986 SCI COnvention in Las Vegas. It now resides somehwere in Southern California last I heard. A trophy very unlikely to ever be surpassed. Rich Elliott Rich Elliott Ethiopian Rift Valley Safaris

Marc, Congrats my friend on another great trophy and hunt. If it makes you feel any better I like your Nyala horns the best! Yes, the hunting Gods have been with you, but to give you credit you have done two things to help in your success. 1) You have booked your hunts with top notch outfitters and PH's who have excellent areas and reputation. 2) You practice and shoot well.

Rich, has this been the best season ERVS has ever had, Mike's 40 7/8 and now Marc's? Kathi, Good question. I can't think of any better one since we started hunting those areas (about 2002) but I can't think of any bad ones either Actually Mike's Mt. Nyala was last season since the quota period runs from July to July. We had several in the mid to high 30's taken this past season (including 2 with archery gear) and a 36" & 38 "in Munessa this fall. Rich Elliott Rich Elliott Ethiopian Rift Valley Safaris

As one who grew up in Ethiopia and an unabashed Perfect Shot series consumer -- is the trip on video? Despite the times and financial dire straights I WILL FIND THE MONEY FOR A DVD!!! My favorite photo has always been of Prince Pahlavi's "yedega agazain" but Marc's simply blows it away (also have Nassos' mt. nyala pix from an old Petersen's HUNTING mag.) Marc, there are Ethiopian restaurants around. Mama Desta's is the only Chicago area one I know... Barry _______________________
