.375 H&H -- actual weights?

Would like to ask fellow .375 H&H owners a favor -- how much do your rifles actually weigh (not factory spec weight)? I'm particularly interested in:

Ruger RSM (please specify newer or older model -- I gather the newer ones are a bit lighter).

Ruger #1

CZ 550

Winchester Model 70

Please specify whether weight includes scope, sling (if so, what kind), ammo, or any modifications to the rifle that would increase or decrease the final result.

Thanks much,

John Frazer

My RSM is about 10# and change with a Burris 1.5-5 on it. It's a couple of years old, so it makes it the newer model. Very soft shooting.

That's interesting, mine is at least a pound heavier. Is yours the Whitworth with the three-leaf rear sight, etc.?

Mine is an Interarms Mark X with a Bell & Carlson Carbelite stock with a 3X9 Leupold and 26" barrel. It goes in the neighborhood of 10 lbs. When I can get a reliable scale I will have to weigh it.

Yes, a late 70s vintage. The stock is slimmed slightly but not by much.

Custom: Pre-64 M70 action, No.3 Douglas 24", Brown Precision Pounder (1 pound stock), NECG banded front sight, Lyman peep rear, 6.75 pounds bare and empty.

All the Winchesters and CZ's in .375 H&H that I have known, weighed in the 9 to 9.5 pound range, bare and empty. One Ruger M77 RSM was 9.5 pounds also. I never owned or weighed a Ruger No.1 in .375 H&H.

The CZ's have lighter barrels, slimmer at the muzzle, than either Winchester or Ruger factory rifles, FWIW.

Bathroom scale accuracy: Model 70 Classic Super Express in .375 H&H with Leupold 1.5X5 in Warne quick release mounts, unloaded = 8.8 pounds. I should probably try weighing it on a real scale.

My 375 mod 70 has been worked over by Lex Webernick of Rifles Inc. It weighs in at about 7 to 8 pounds depending on which scope and sling I have on it. I have QD mounts and a couple of scopes and slings for it. Depending on what kind of hunt I am on I can switch them out. I think the rifle from the factory was about 9 pounds bare. D

Although cartridge selection is important there is nothing that will substitute for proper first shot placement. Good hunting, "D"

I am a big guy and I don't like light rifles. I have all my rifes adjusted to weigh the same thing--10.5 lbs with scope. I have not had a problem carrying a rifle of that weight. I also have all the triggers adjusted the same--- 2.5 lbs. I have found that there is a lot of "carry over" shooting one gun to the next.

Winchester Stainless Classic, no open sights, original tupperware stock, Leupold QR mounts & rings, Leupold 2x7 Vari-X II, sling, 3 cartridges - last time I weighed it, I seem to remember 9.5 lbs.

If you are going to carry a big stick, you've got to whack someone with it at least every once in while.

Thank you all for the replies.

The reason for the inquiry was that I had restocked my Mark X in a Boyd's JRS laminate, and it seemed awfully heavy.

Yesterday I took the stock off and weighed it and the original walnut item -- and found that the laminate was a full pound heavier, pushing the weight with scope and sling to 10.5 pounds or maybe a little more.

I've put the original stock back on and like the balance a lot better now that it's in the 9.5 pound range, which seems like a "mainstream" weight for a .375 based on these replies.

By the way, I'm not sure who the bigger he-men are -- those who can carry an 11 lb. rifle all day, or those who can shoot a 7-lb. .375! Discuss amongst yourselves...

John,

From Boyd's website:

quote:
If the weight of your stock is a problem, BOYDS’ offers their lightweight option, which consists of machining a lightening cut in the butt stock along with pocketing the forearm area. This process will not affect the integrity of the stock, and a front swivel can still be added. This process can reduce the overall weight of your stock by as much as 10 oz.
Light Weight Option......................................................................................................$34.99

Redlander,

My stock came from Boyd's with the lightening cut in the forend. However, a lot of it ended up getting filled with Steelbed behind the front recoil lug!

Dakota model 76LH with 23" barrel, quarter rib, barrel band front sight and sling swivel stud, english walnut stock with cheekpeice and with long 14 5/8" lop, 4 down magazine, Talley QR mounts, Leupold 1.5X5: exactly 9.5lbs on a very accurate certified digital scale.

For me this seems to be the ideal weight. The rifle is well balanced and pretty steady when shooting offhand.

I have a 23" slick barrelled custom Dakota Safari with the factory original Clifton synthetic stock. The rifle goes 8.5 pounds with a Leupold 1.75x6. To me it is about perfect for the caliber. I don't think a 10 pound 375 is necessary eventhough it would be a pussycat to shoot. I prefer the portability of my rifle.

My 375H&H is a Dakota and goes just over 8 1/2 lbs pounds, empty without scope and exactly 9 1/2 lbs with scope - 1,5x5 Luepold in Talley QD's. I holds one in the chamber and four down.

I think this is ideal.
