416 Taylor vs. 416 Remington

Ladies and Gentlemen:

I'm building a dangerous game rifle on a 1908 Mauser action. Most likely it will be a 416 Taylor with a 1.5-6 power scope, because it fits into the action better than the Remington.

How does the 416 Taylor stack up against the 416 Remington in terminal performance on the Big Five and does the Taylor lose anything in ranging ability for plains game?

According to "International Big Bore Cartridge Load Data Collection" by Pierre vd Walt (copies of which are available for sale on our website), the 416 Taylor delivers a Taylor KO of 55.3 vs 57.1 for the Rem, both with 400 gr bullets, even though the Rem has 18% more case capacity and is loaded to a higher pressure. It duplicates the older loadings for the 416 Rigby and is a fine choice for DG. It has the advantage of fitting in an intermediate length action (with some work) whereas the Rem needs a standard long action. Easy to reload. Oh, did I mention I have four EZ kits ready to go in this caliber on commercial Mauser actions with Hogue overmolded stocks?

I can get 2400 fps (the same as the nominal Rigby and Rem. velocities) with a 400 gr. conventional lead jacketed bullet in the Taylor but there is not enough room for homogeneous bullets, if that is a consideration.

Making my second Taylor now. It's all I'll ever need.

I have a three 416 rifles and load them all to the original ballistic equivalent. The Taylor has been to Africa more than any others as I have owned it much longer. It has accounted for 11 buffalo and a variety of plains game. The Remington I built has done two one shot kills. The Rigby I bought in Cape Town a few years back and I was told it was used extensively for culling in Kruger. All of them have been loaded to 2350 with a 400 gr. bullet. I see no reason to load hotter and therefore if the three shoot the same bullet at the same speed, there is NO difference. I am now loading GS customs and North Fork 370/380gr. bullets in the Taylor and the Remington as they are much better bullets for their intent and purpose.

How do folks compare the recoil between the .416 Taylor and the other .416's, is there any discernable difference?

I think if you look at the recoil calculator here on the forum, you will find that there is a corolation. If you have equal bullet weight, equal rifle weight, and equal velocity the cartridge with the least powder charge weight will give the lowest recoil energy. That is where the 416 Taylor shines.

Not to be argumentative but the difference in the amount of powder between my Talor and Rem. to get the same velocities is only 2 to 3 grains, not enough to notice.
