I have a small handheld FLIR device (Scout-PS) that I use for boating and would like to bring it on a hunt in Zimbabwe this August (stopping in SA first). I see that the SCI Safari magazine is advertising these and the viewing of African wildlife, so maybe they know something, but I don't want to risk arrest or confiscation because this technology is restricted to leave the U.S. or to bring into Africa. Anyone have any information on where to determine this or any personal experience? It would be great to look into the bush at night and see what lurks about. I don't know, but I presume it is illegal to take it OCONUS. Night Vision devices were, and may still be, prohibited. The issue is can these items be used to benefit an enemy of the US - think terrorists. Lots of items you can buy and use in the US may not be exported by an individual. Will you get caught if you take it with you? Probably not, but is it worth the risk? Only you can answer that question. Those devices are regulated by ITAR and it is illegal to take them out of the US. I'm not sure I would risk it. LostHorizonsOutfitters.com ---------------------------- "You may all go to hell, and I will go to Texas" Davy Crockett 1835 ---------------------------- | |||

The FLIR products are readily available in South Africa, as is high generation night vision equipment. Not sure why it would be illegal to bring it into the country. Exporting it permanently, sure, but as part of your equipment? Please post back when you get your answer. Thanks and I would think so too. A lot of computer parts are not exportable to China for example but that doesn't prevent you from traveling with a laptop. I was just looking for some written clarification, especially on the Zimbabwe side since they would seem more likely to restrict based on poaching, etc. "I envy not him that eats better meat than I do; nor him that is richer, or that wears better clothes than I do; I envy him, and him only, that kills bigger deer than I do." At the Dortmund,Germany outdoor show, I bought a digital nightvision scope.( To use for Bushpig hunting for my hunters) I kept it in its bag in my carry on the entire way. Not once did they even ask to take it out. Its not as if the equipment is banned here, as you can purchase it here. If there is a problem, it will be from the US side. I have been in the market for a FLIR for a while now.How do you find your unit? What type of detection and identification range are you getting?
