If you buy a hunt advertise as a late season "Deal" with a great outfitter and area. Would you expect to be treated the same as a full paying clients? I am not talking about wine, dinning or lodging. Should you have equal access to the best areas and animals the outfitter controls? Robert Johnson

Definitely ...... otherwise, it's no "Deal". ____________________________ .470 & 9.3X74R Chapuis' Tikka O/U 9.3X74R Searcy Classics 450/.400 3" & .577 C&H .375 2 1/2" Krieghoff .500 NE Member Dallas Safari Club

What Frank said, If you get a rock-bottom price, but then are restricted to lesser animals or accomodations or hunt areas, then it's not a "Deal", it is just less money for a lower-quality hunt

Robert, I'd suggest indicating gratitude for the opportunity to hunt at a bargain rate and the willingness or desire to upgrade to include one or more additional species at his usual rate . You'll still get a great deal and the chance to do a buff or leopard or....hunt at a lower rate than would normally be possible and he and his trackers will work their hearts out for you. Jim

If I purchased a "discounted" hunt and then was treated second rate, that would be the LAST hunt that I would ever book with that outfitter, and I would make sure that my hunting friends knew about the second rate treatment as well. I booked a "discounted" hunt for a leopard in Zimbabwe, had a great time, and because I was treated first rate, booked with the PH for the following year and shot a second (monster) leopard. He and his staff were rewarded well on both hunts.

Be prepared for some disadvantages in booking late season specials. These include; Skittish game (pushed and shot at all season). Can be hot as hell. Can get rained on, out and even stranded. reduced quota available. Spent PH and trackers. Baits going off fast. Possibility of missing out on your preferred itinerary. If you can live with this, you can save some $.

I work in the public sector. As such, I have only gone on discounted hunts. I identify the animals I'm interested in, determine where they are available, then research who the best operators are for each area/species. Once I have identified my target operators, I try to meet them at SCI or Dallas, then attempt to negotiate a discounted/canceled hunt. Sometimes, it means waiting on an e-mail list for years. But, it has been well worth the pain. To date, I have been very sucesful in taking 3 of the big five for nominal prices.
