I'll do one more. I't was a beautiful spring day in the interior of Alaska. I put my 7 year old son in the back of my Super Cub and headed out to find a lake full of muskrat pushups. About an hour out I found just what I was looking for. The intention was to set up camp, set some rat traps and wait (till the next day)for hunger black bears to pop out feeding on the just exposed shore grasses. I pulled a sled out of the back, filled it with traps, wire and cut some 1" dia. branches. My son would run ahead with a stick and beat on the pushups to see if they were hollow. When he'd find a good one I'd take the ax, cut the top off and set the trap on the shelf. In the distance we saw a beaver hut (stay way from due to thin ice) which I told my son to stay quite a way from. After setting a few, my son was running about 50 yards in front of me when he came to the next push up. He started to hit the top of the ice when all of a sudden the ice for 10 feet around him just gave way and down he went. Sprinting towards the hole I dove and slide on my belly right to the edge and reached out just as he was going down. I almost jerked his arm off as I flung him back and beside me onto the ice. He was soaked and kept saying, "I'm Ok, I'm OK". I picked him up and ran for the plane, as I got there I immediately stripped his clothing and bundled him in a sleeping bag. Without other heavy clothing for him. I had no choice but to collect our traps and fly home. As a parent the scariests thing that could happen to me, is something happening to one of my kids. | |||

A few mistakes w. cars on the track... Had a some run-ins w. thugs in a few countries. The closest I came was pure stupidity -- I forgot that I'm "Formerly" Aglifter, and not still one -- I was unloading a butcher's band saw from my truck by myself on a dewy morning. I was lowering it out of the truck when I slipped, and it hooked my leg on the way down... there was an impressive amount of bleeding, and a subsequent scar, but it managed to, barely, miss anything too vital... And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor. | |||
