What is the difference between an East African Greater Kudu and a Greater Kudu from Namibia? "There are worse memorials to a life well-lived than a pair of elephant tusks." Robert Ruark

SBT, I think the East African variety are generally a fair bit smaller. If memory serves any East African Kudu over 50" is big! and 55" out of site!!! Then there is always the price difference between a Nambian and a Tanzanian Safari...! I am sure there are other guys here that can give you a much better answer than I did. Regards, Dave

Scott, I think David has pretty much covered it. I've shot both and I can't tell any difference with the exception of the E.A. variety being smaller in horn. It is a much bigger deal to take a nice greater kudu in Tanzania though. Mark MARK H. What stands out to me is Hemingway agonizing over his search for an East African kudu in Green Hills of Africa, contrasted with their abundance in Namibia. They are clearly a common animal in Namibia, and while quality is quality, it's certainly not a scarce animal by any means in Southern Africa. Bob

They're two different subspecies. The southern African variety is the Southern Greater Kudu or Tragalaphus Strepsiceros and the East African Greater Kudu is the Tragalaphus Strepsiceros Boa. The latter has 6 to 8 stripes which are brighter and the southern has 8 to 9 less conspicuous stripes. The southern greater has larger horns and (IMO) are a lot more common than their EA cousin....
