DGR scope mounts

I hope someday some interprising young gunsmith will make a set of quick detachable scope mounts that will clear the receiver of a bolt action DGR so that you can see a proper set of low mounted iron sights over the top of them.. Frankly its ridiculas that they don't and obvious that they are only scope oriented...A nice NECG sights or the wonderful screw gizzie from Wisner that used to be on the old M-70 big bores just cannot be seen over Talleys, leupolds and others rear base, close but no cigar...I suppose the only answer today is the old Griffen and Howe, it leave the whole damn receiver clean as a whistle but they are bloody expensive...Talleys work with high island rear sights but thats not what I want, I want to see the Wisner rear sight over the bases...Maybe a Talbot, I looked at them at one time, maybe they clear, does anyone have Talbots contact address, or any field experience with them..Also I believe Kimbers would work, but I don't like the Kimber system on a Mauser...

Ray,

From this picture, the Talbot system looks as though it might make the grade, but it sure seems to be a close call.

Once again the true genius of the Blaser R 93
proves itself.
When you remove the scope from a Blaser, Nothing is left on the barrel. The whole mount comes off.... then goes back on with NO loss of zero.

I have removeable mounts on my .416, Griffin & Howell did the work, and they did a excellent job! My factory iron sights work perfect, no modification done on the iron sights.

Griffin & Howell weren't cheap, but when it comes to a DGR who's going to mess around.

I just may have to go the Griffen and Howe route...the other option is a set of claw mounts..about the same money, they sure do work well....

Of course there's always the CZ / BRNO's and Rugers that handle that issue very nicely!

Mr. Atkinson,

Give Mr. Talbot a call. I spoke to him for nearly an hour in March about the very thing. I seem to recall that you can see the irons on an M70 w/ his bases. He had even made a set for a Ruger that works also but required machining off the integral base. I don't think you can find a set of mounts that are as repeatable and quick to remove and replace the scope.

Good Luck!

Ray,

As Les and N E 450 No2 mentioned, integral bases are the answer. The idea of having to screw on a seperate base on a modern rifle seems a strange on to me...Of course thats not much help on an m98 unless theres enough metal in the reciever to mill some in..

Regards,

Pete

The Talbot mount is by far ahead of all other quick release mounts...One never has to take your eyes off your animal and push a pin and pull scope off...This all takes place in no more then 2 to 3 seconds...

Yes, good steel Weaver type bases as made by Warne with either Warne rings or the Leupold QRW Rings might be the answer. I have a set of the latter on my Rem. 700 .35 Whelen and the sights are quite visable over those bases.I took the scope off Saturday and put it back on. It shot an 11/16ths inch group but was
exaactly where it had been elevation wise and only 3/4" to the left of center.

One factor which exacerbates the problem of the base portion of detachable top mounts (Talley, Leupold QR, etc.) is the great diameter of the front receiver ring, which necessitates mounting the front base so much higher than the centerline of the bore. The receiver of a large-ring Mauser is 1.400†in diameter, while many barrels are about 1.200†in diameter at the breech end. If the front base is moved to the barrel and the rear base is lowered to match you’ve gained .100†of vision. This type of set-up requires a very long scope, such as the Leupold 3X, Weaver K2.3 or K3, or Lyman All-American 2.5X or 3X. With the Leupold QR base you also have the option of using an extension ring in the front, but I doubt you could get the ring back to the usual location.

In addition to allowing better vision over the bases this set-up has two advantages. First, it lowers the scope for Talley rings, which by their design are pretty high compared to Leupold QR low or super low rings. Second, it looks really cool! Cool
