First Class all the way!
He was instrumental in me going on my first African hunt.
I have had so much fun and joy because of him.
And non of us would be discussing this here now if was not for him.
Because there would be no AR!
I agree...I have family that went on Safari and used to walk around their trophy rooms as a kid in awe...then in college I read Death in the Long Grass and I knew that was what I wanted to do.
..and like Saeed said..there would be no AR without Peter Hathaway Capstick so put that in your pipe and smoke it!

Yes, Capstick may have stretched the truth a bit but so did many others (John Taylor, Elmer Keith to name two). So what? The good he did was astounding in getting so many of us, including myself, turned on the Africa. I'm sorry he passed so young. Cal

I enjoyed his books very much although he was not the one stirring my initial interest in Africa.
I think we all tend to forget one thing. The typical safari hunter today knows a whole lot more than they did when PHC's books were written. So, yes, they seem much more unbelievable now. Regardless, they are entertaining.
I did see him at SCI shortly before his death . He did not look good. Not good at all. While I was saddened by his passing, I was not surprised.

Makes me think that a Capstick safari in his old stomping grounds of the Luangwa would make for a good gentleman's safari?
Good on Peter and whilst safari hunting survives he will always be with us.
I could care less what he did I still love reading his stories. He can draw you in to a story as good as any writer.

So Mr SquirrelNut sir, don't you think an apology to Mr MacD37 is in order now that he has graciously decided to call you out on your angry accusations ? It would certainly be the gentlemanly thing to do and would help set a good example here on AR.

I don't know anything about Capstick. But I DO know about J.A. Hunter. I remember reading his books when I was a kid. It is a pity that his name is not remembered more. Everything I have heard points to his being a gentleman, but I am sure someone on this forum will find some dirt. Peter.

Capstick is a very good story teller and I love reading his books. I don't really care whether or not they are factually true 100%. They are hunting, fishing and adventure stories first and foremost and like all such good stories, especially after application of appropriate lubrication the beast will be a bit bigger, run a bit faster and end up a bit closer than might be than if they were conducted on a truly scientific basis.
I am not sure if he would have sold much copy about shooting dragon flies with bb guns if it was written as a scientific paper.

More than anyone he got me excited about Africa as a school boy. I watched his videos with Ken Wilson when I was younger, and have read most of his books.

He does not want to admit to Who he is or what factual knowledge he has, so simply ignore his ass!!!!!!

I neither have nor particularly need heroes.
As for Capstick, I do not know what he did or didn't do, but have noted before that much of what he's derided for having claimed to have done he simply didn't claim. Basic literacy is all that is required to understand that most of the tales in his books are not his, he merely relates what he heard. Basic literacy eludes some.

Bloody hell!
Almost spit a mouthful of coffee on my iphone!
I can just imagine Cal is tagging along too with his hero.

CH, there are some events in PHC's writings that are over-exaggerated to the point they even beat the best science fiction BS and yet there are some people who swallow it hook, line and sinker - which brings to mind cult psychology and Waco Texas.
If one were to review and edit 30% of Capstick's published verbal diarrhea one might end up with some acceptable prose, most of which would relate to hunters other than himself.
Had he still been alive, he would be 77 years of age and if you were to "stop for one minute and think", there are still a good number of people, some younger, some older, who would have known and have outlived him.
Again, if you honestly believe half of what he wrote you must also be a firm believer in the Tooth Fairy.
P.S. I for one am most certainly not jealous nor paranoid of Capstick and his fairy tales.
