Newbie Question: If I shoot a nice elephant in Africa with tusks...can I bring the ivory into the U.S. without any problems ?

There are a few countries in africa that one can not import ivory from. Mozambique I believe is an example. Places like SA, Tanz, Zim and Botswana have export ivory provided you get the Cites permits. ****************************************************************** R. Lee Ermey: "The deadliest weapon in the world is a Marine and his rifle." ****************************************************************** We're going to be "gifted" with a health care plan we are forced to purchase and fined if we don't, Which purportedly covers at least ten million more people, without adding a single new doctor, but provides for 16,000 new IRS agents, written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn't understand it, passed by a Congress that didn't read it but exempted themselves from it, and signed by a President, with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn't pay his taxes, for which we'll be taxed for four years before any benefits take effect, by a government which has already bankrupted Social Security and Medicare, all to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, and financed by a country that's broke!!!!! Actually, the first determination is whether you are trophy hunting or doing a PAC (problem animal control) hunt. In a PAC hunt situation, no part of the elephant is exportable... you can argue about tail hair bracelets, if you want. Trophy elephants can be exported into the US from nine CITIES approved countries. Moz is not on the list. Please check with your PH or booking agent into the steps to legally import your trophy elephant and most of all, enjoy the hunt. For many of us, elephant is the pinnacle of African big game hunting! It would be the pinnacle for me,as well, if I could afford a trophy ele hunt! I've been very lucky to be barely able to afford a few Cape buffalo hunts with a few plains game thrown in as condiments for the main course! I have absolutely no desire to shoot an elephant simply because he's an elephant, so PAC hunts do not interest me at all! Many of the PAC ele I've seen pictures look to be no more than 7 or 8 yrs old, and not much bigger than a Hippo. I like hunting Hippo on dry land, but even then I want a big old bull or none at all! I guess when you look at it properly, an elephant is an elephant, after all, just not for me! Like the origenal poster, fanofdbls,if I can't bring back the ivory, and other things legally, than I'll hunt something else! ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

If you cannot afford a trophy bull hunt and still want to reach the pinacle of African Hunting, give a PAC hunt a try. A couple of PAC bulls: JPK Free 500grains

I agree with JPK, PAC hunts are just as exciting... sometime more so than trophy hunts when stalking tuskless cows in mixed herds. It's one thing to sneak up on a solitary bull or one with a couple of Askaris, but quite another to move into a herd situation! Lots of noses and twice as many eyes! Trophy bulls will have you wearing out shoe leather on the other hand. Hell, if it's elephant hunting, it's all good! While I wish I had some tusks framing my fireplace, I'd not give anything for the fun of a p.a.c. hunt. In fact, next week at this time I'll be airborne on the way to Harare! Last year, being in the middle of 12 elephants, trying to get up to the only bull in the bunch... now that was exciting! And Mac: Not all taken on these hunts are so small? JudgeG ... just counting time 'til I am again finding balm in Gilead chilled out somewhere in the Selous.

Can't one legally buy the tusks later at auction or from the communal council? Can one still get a CITES export permit for the purchased ivory? If one shot a decent tusker on a PAC hunt, it might be still a way to get the "trophy" as well. Probably end up cheaper than a trophy elephant trophy fee as well. Shaun Buffee whom has been mentioned here when an apprentice, or doing a cull, shot a 70 lb elephant and didn't get to keep the ivory nor the money to buy it later on. We were talking about this on our safari last year. I think it was disappointing for him, and who knows whether one will ever stumble on another 70 lb elephant these days in a hunting career lifetime.

Whoa! A 70 pounder on a cull hunt? On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died. Yep, some sort of freebie hunt. Disappointing for the young guy not being able to afford to buy the ivory.
