Parks authorities to capture stray baboon

Chronicle Reporter

THE Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZNPWMA) will at the weekend capture a stray baboon that has been roaming the streets of Bulawayo for the past two weeks terrorising shoppers, a senior official said yesterday.

Speaking from Harare, ZNPWMA Public Relations Manager, Retired Major Edward Mbewe, said the authority was concerned about the increasing number of stray baboons in the city.
The baboons reportedly climb on National Railways of Zimbabwe train wagons as the locomotives travel along various routes.
“We have been acting on these baboons and last month the one which was at the NRZ Bulawayo Station was taken to Matopo. Another one was captured when it started troubling people at Mpilo Central Hospital,†Rtd Maj Mbewe said.
“It is difficult to capture them during the week when there are lot of people in the city centre. This weekend we are going to act on the one which has been spotted in the city centre.â€
He said the best way to control the baboons would be to capture them before they disembark from the NRZ wagons.
Meanwhile, Rtd Maj Mbewe advised the Killarney family that has been living with a snake in its yard for more than a year to approach the local ZNPWMA offices for assistance.
“The man has to call or visit our offices as they are in the city centre so that he can get the appropriate assistance,†he said.
According to a letter published in yesterday’s Chronicle, Mr S A Mpofu said he had not approached the authority after being told that he would have to “pay a lot of money†to remove the snake believed to be a cobra.
“He will be charged a nominal fee because we have to recover costs. It is not like he has to pay for the fuel,†Rtd Maj Mbewe said.
The authority would not be able to react without a formal approach as it needed to keep records for the requests and responses made, he said.
Meanwhile, a concerned resident who wanted to remain anonymous encouraged Mr Mpofu to use diesel or petrol to scare the snake from its habitat. He said Mr Mpofu would need to sprinkle small quantities of the fuels and the snake would be forced to move to other areas.

I'd sprinkle more than small quantities of fuel on that snake's hole if it were me. By the way, the largest marauding baboon is still running the country. Why don't they do something about him? He's been terrorizing the entire country for way too long.

If they get rid of the "head baboon" it will just open up a spot for one of the younger "Satellite" baboons to take his place.

I think that the people of Zim are quite fed up with the Baboon troop that is running the place. I don't think that taking out the head marauding baboon would result in more of the same.
